Salmon or Halibut Fishing?

We will be sailing to Alaska the last week of May.

Hubby wants to go fishing.!!

Princess offers either a Salmon or Halibut excursion in Ketchikan.

Which one would he have a better chance of really catching?

Salmon or Halibut??

Trudy, the last week of May isn’t a good time to go Salmon fishing. I would go Halibut or Cod fishing. I personally prefer Halibut over Salmon. I think Halibut is much better tasting fish.

I am not a fishing type person but I have sailed many times at the end of May and I have met a ton of individuals who have spent $400 plus on a fishing excursion out of Ketchikan and were greatly disappointed that they did not catch a thing and complained about the excursion. I don't think I have met anyone with success is fishing in Ketchikan during this time period. This has happened on several cruises.

 

If you are really interested, I would do research or ask the vendors what their chances are if catching a fish is important to you.

Certainly not peak for either. Not to say he WON'T catch something but his chances would be better later. My family has an annual trip for salmon and halibut, mid June. Used to be Ketchikan but now it's sitka.

 

Have your husband to do a little research, starting with info on the Alaska Fish and Game for run times, etc

Another option... Ketchikan canned salmon is available year round.
