DrivesLikeMario Posted April 28, 2016 #1 Share Posted April 28, 2016 I keep getting conflicting information and would like to call this town by it's correct name. Can anyone tell me which is correct: "St. George" or "St. George's" (possessive form)? Thanks. ;)
Langoustine Posted April 28, 2016 #2 Share Posted April 28, 2016 (edited) This gets very complicated (unlike the difference between advise and advice). Take a look at these and make your own decision: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St._George's,_Bermuda and http://www.bermuda-attractions.com/bermuda2_000028.htm Edited April 28, 2016 by Langoustine
iheartbda Posted April 28, 2016 #3 Share Posted April 28, 2016 (edited) St. George's is the parish, there are nine parishes in Bermuda, in which the town of St. George is located. Edited April 28, 2016 by iheartbda
DrivesLikeMario Posted April 28, 2016 Author #4 Share Posted April 28, 2016 AHA!! So that's it! No wonder I've seen both names. I just didn't want to call it by the wrong name. Nothing more annoying than a traveler who doesn't respect the place they're visiting. ;) Thank you both! :)

iheartbda Posted April 28, 2016 #6 Share Posted April 28, 2016 OP, where things may be a bit confusing is the city of Hamilton and Hamilton parish. Hamilton is located in Devonshire parish and Hamilton parish is two parishes over from Hamilton.:D

jollyjones Posted April 29, 2016 #8 Share Posted April 29, 2016 OP, where things may be a bit confusing is the city of Hamilton and Hamilton parish. Hamilton is located in Devonshire parish and Hamilton parish is two parishes over from Hamilton.:D Sorry but the City of Hamilton is located in Pembroke parish, just west of Devonshire. East of Devonshire is Smiths Parish, then there is Hamilton Parish which was originally Bedford Tribe although some authorities believe it was Harington Tribe. This was named after Lucy Harington who became Duchess of Bedford when she married - she was one of the early investors in the Somers Isles Company which owned Bermuda from 1612 until it became a Crown Colony in 1683. She ran into money troubles so the name was changed for James, 2nd Marquis of Hamilton somewhere about 1620. The City of Hamilton didn't exist till later and was named for Henry Hamilton, Bermuda's Governor 1788 - 1794.

jdarch Posted April 30, 2016 #10 Share Posted April 30, 2016 St. George's is the parish, there are nine parishes in Bermuda, in which the town of St. George is located. Just to gum things up, it is also my understanding that if you refer to the town without the formal "Town of," it is proper to call it "St. George's " as well...
