Well, we were very far away and saw no calving at all. Perhaps Regatta is allowed closer, as it is a smaller ship. And the ships I have been there on previously were smaller as well, but we were very disappointed in how little we could really see being so far away.

I know that no other cruise ships were at Hubbard Glacier at the same time we were. I do not know if the conditions change hourly or daily (I suspect they might) or if the design of different ships made part of the difference, but it was clear to me that at least 1/2 of the distance between us and the glacier was strewn with good size icebergs.

We took a glacier cruise in Whittier before boarding and saw several glaciers up close, two of which calved, so we were content to just enjoy the scenic beauty at Hubbard from a distance-- but I do recall getting closer to at least a couple glaciers when I was on the Veendam back in 2002.
