Smoking?

I'm asking for my sister, who smokes. Can you smoke on your balcony? Were sailing on the Carnival Spirit in Feb next year. I know there is designated areas around the ship, but I keep getting conflicting stories about smoking on your balcony.

Go to Carnival's home page and click on the "F.A.Q." section. In the search bar there, type in "smoking policy". You'll see where smoking is and is not allowed. Among the areas where smoking is not allowed are the balconies.

straight out of Carnival

Stateroom and Suite Accommodations

All staterooms and suites are an entirely smoke free environment, including the outside balcony. This policy includes all forms of smoking, including but not limited to, cigarettes, electronic cigarettes (E-cigarettes), personal vaporizers, cigars and tobacco pipes.

Guests who smoke in their staterooms or on their balconies will be assessed a $250 cleaning and refreshing fee on their Sail & Sign account. Information on this policy and fee is included in Carnival's Cruise Ticket Contract, section 8. Guest agrees to strictly comply with Carnival’s non-smoking policy.

Section 8

© Any and all forms of smoking, including but not limited to, cigarettes, cigars, electronic cigarettes, and personal vaporizers, are strictly prohibited onboard except in designated exterior open deck areas, certain night clubs, and designated areas in the casino. All staterooms and suite accommodations are entirely smoke free, including the outside balcony (Effective October 9, 2014). Guest agrees to strictly comply with Carnival’s non-smoking policy. Guest further acknowledges and agrees that any violation of this policy shall, in the sole discretion of Carnival, constitute a material breach of this cruise contract. In the event of such breach, Guest forfeits all rights hereunder, including the right to remain on board. Carnival reserves the right to disembark the Guest(s), at any port, as determined by Carnival. Carnival shall not be liable for any refund or other compensation or damages whatsoever to any Guest disembarked pursuant to this provision, or who disembarks because another Guest is so disembarked, and all such Guests forfeit all rights under Carnival’s “Vacation Guarantee.” Guest and Carnival further agree that any violation of the non-smoking policy would also cause Carnival to incur damages, including but not limited to, loss of guest goodwill, revenue, cleaning, maintenance and/or other costs. Guest and Carnival expressly acknowledge the difficulty of ascertaining the amount of such damages, and therefore agree that a reasonable estimate of the damages for any violation of the non-smoking policy is $250 USD. Guest authorizes a charge in this amount as liquidated damages, as well as repatriation expenses (including airfare) against Guest’s on board charge account, without further notice, for any violation of the non-smoking policy.

I have read a couple of peoples reviews that stated they saw people smoking on their balconies, and other people saying they could smell people's smoke from their balconies, that's why I was confused as to whether you could or can't smoke on balconies. Well I for one am glad, as I can't stand the smell of it. That policy should adhere to everyone, it's not fair that some people don't care about the rules and the others abide by them, anywho, thank you for your replies, I forgot to look at Carnivals FAQ page!

What conflicting stories? There is no smoking on a balcony and hasn't been for years.

Here's an example of a conflicting story. A person "CLAIMS" that they told their cabin steward they were going to smoke on their balcony and he told them, no problem, they would charge them $250.00 and handed them an ashtray. Can't say I believe it, but that's circulating on social media.

I would doubt the validity of it. Why would a steward be carrying an ashtray years after the ban?

Rules, like laws, are enforced by some penalty. In the case of smoking in your cabin, including the balcony apparently, the penalty is a $250 cleaning fee. Like for any rule or law violation, some people may decide the probability of getting caught and the penalty combine to make it worthwhile to take the risk and break the rule. Smoking on the balcony vs. in the room likely reduces the risk of getting caught further. Compared to the overall cost of the cruise, a $250 penalty is small and some people may be willing to pay that to be able to smoke on their balcony.

Cabin stewards are not police. They're working for tips. If handing over an ashtray generates a better tip, I'm not surprised they do it.

Posters here have suggested if Carnival was serious about cutting down on liquor smuggling they would deny boarding to anyone caught with it. The same thing could be said about smoking on balconies. Get caught and you're put off at the next port. Not suggesting they do that, but the way to reduce the number of people breaking a rule is to increase the penalty for getting caught.

Well, this is a Carnival Ship, and if you read most posts, the common thread is often times, it's my vacation, and I will do what I want. That's one of the many reasons, why Carnival is considered the WalMart of the Seas

I didn't believe the guy either. He insisted. He said that the steward when and got his friend an ashtray. Someone asked what rumors, and just stating the specifics of one. Honestly, the idea really ticked me off if it were true. It's my understanding that fine was per occurrence and if it someone repeatedly violated they would be put off the ship. That idea that it actually happens gets a lot of laughs.

I would applaud Carnival for a follow-through like that!

Has anyone ever been fined for smoking in the wrong place?:(

I love Walmart. I love Carnival. I think it's great that Carnival is the Walmart of the seas.

The majority of the people who use the term are not using it as a compliment.

That superior feeling, that I know they are feeling, it's all in their heads. ;)

As a smoker myself I'm actually glad Carnival banned smoking on balconies. I can book cheaper staterooms and have more $ in my wallet.

I agree that smoking on balconies impedes others around me from enjoying the balcony they paid extra for. Unlike most defined smoking areas where a non smoker can avoid it...on balconies they can not.

I'm sure I'll be flamed for this but I'm a believer in compromise and the current rules IMO achieve that. I can only hope they deal more stringently with rule breakers or its going to lead to more restrictions.

Do those of you who use this term, does it somehow make you feel superior?::confused:

Not really. I have been on Carnival ships, and to WalMart. I go to neither now. I learned my lesson and happily share it. Many other cruise lines to chose from, and although most are considered main stream companies, they do an extremely well job at being a step above. You can go to JCPenny, and get inexpensive products, but you don't see them fighting over cheap t-shirts at JCPenny on Black Friday or like on Carnival.

This smoking thread already turned to statements that are debating whether you can or not regardless of the rules.

Having fun, please don't take this as a rude question, because I mean nothing rude by it, but why are you in a Carnival folder if you don't sail Carnival anymore? From my point of view I see no other reason, but to trash the line. If I'm wrong about that, I apologize.

I just got off the Royal's Allure of the Seas, and trust me, the stuff I saw people do (and wear to formal night) is no different than what I've seen on my Carnival cruises. My family agreed...not much difference in the cruise lines as far as how they do things and the clientelle that sails on them, so the fact that people use the term "Carnival is the Walmart of the Seas" is rubbish.

It must have been an illusion because Having fun says Rccl is a cut above. :D

The differences we found between RC and CC were more favorable towards Carnival. The room was larger on Carnival, the entertainment better (less cheesy) and the food pretty much both the same.
