I promise to....

Cruise Arizona

Recommended Posts

I promise to never post another thought or opinion regarding dress codes or politics.

I am now wallowing in mud for quoting page 30 of the cruise docs.

I have also recently lost a 20 year friendship for defending my position against an old friend via e-mail who is at the other end of the political perspective.

They are much in the same vein, and I will probably have to enter a 12 step program inorder to reform my old habits.

Yikes. I definitely try to avoid politics with most of my friends. Most agree with me anyway more or less. My favorites are the super-liberals who vote Republican and conservatives who vote Democrat just because their parents do....grr....think for yourself! If she/he is so mad at you over politics, I guess they don't deem your friendship worth it. Hope things improve :)

I wrote an email a few days ago to this person because he lives over seas. I was thinking that things were distant but smooth between us. I wrote a note basically along the lines that you sent me political e-mails, I defendend my position, and then your copied my responses to your friends for them to then attack me... But I forgive you, let's never discuss polictics again... Friendships are more important.

The response I got back from him as baically..."You let politics get in the way of our friendships". Not the response I was expecting.

So tonight I wrote him a heart felt appology for any offence I had given him, and once again asked that friendship supercede politics. We'll see what happens from here, but here I was thinking he was the bad guy, and to my suprise, I was the bad guy.

If a tux is standard, does that mean it is moderate and anyone who does not wear a tux is extreme? (pick your side of extreme..right or left).

Seriously, I too had a life long friendship explode over politics...for years we have sent those stupid internet jokes to each other...both leftist and rightist. Sent him one, he went bonkers, have not heard a word from him since!

One problem with E-mail, as well as message boards, is that it can be difficult for the intended reader to determine whether someone is serious or just joking around, because they can't see your facial expression or hear the tone of your voice. Using frequent LOL's can sometimes exacerbate the problem, instead of clarifying things, because they are subject to multiple interpretations, as well. Consequently, I find myself limiting E-mail correspondance these days to simply share news or make plans, and have gone back to using the phone more often, as in the old days, to "visit" with friends and family.

The flames and misunderstandings are the down side of these boards.

It would be nice if we didn't have either one of those,

but the good side is the wealth of information, and making and keeping up with new friends from future and past cruises.

Also, I have laughed a whole lot on these boards. Especially when somebody like NEWT posts. He is so funny because he never takes these things seriously at all.

Also on my roll call, there has been one particular lady who lives in San Diego who has been so helpful in assisting us with hotel and restuarant recommendations. Most people on here are very nice, I guess like most people in the world. Just a few crumudgens can kind of get you down.

I remember the subject of politics came up at our dinner table briefly during dinner, DH was smart enough to keep his mouth shut, and I was relieved when the subject quickly changed.

Anyway, I am now swearing off any futher questions or posts about the dress codes!!! Really I really mean it. I just have to say to myself when I feel the need to chime in: "Step away from the keyboad, keep your hands in the air!..."

Suzanne,

I am not sure that this is/was truly a friendship, an acquaintenceship perhaps, but a friend would never do what you say this fella did (as highlighted). You have offered him an olive branch. His call now. If he does not respond with a sincere apology, I would write him off as a friend. Because if he doesn't apologize, he is not worth the expended energy you are using. You may want to deal/talk with him in the future, but certainly leave politics out of any conversation.

Karyn, I guess that was some keeper!

Nothing will ever change on these message boards when it comes to dress code talk. I finally got to the point where I just keep my fingers still and skip on by, however I speak my mind when aboard the ship and my friends know this:

Another good laugh for the day. I think the last time I saw one of those was in the French Quarter during Mardis Gras about 15 years ago.

Thanks DocJohnB,

I haven't heard back from here since I wrote my applogy for my responses, but I think you're right, Just let it go.

Now, Aren't we on here to talking about cruising or some nonesense like that.

I head Celebrity is a great cruise line. Anybody else here that?

Suzanne,

If you weren' t feeling so badly about how your comments were being taken here, I'd post a response to that last comment:

I head Celebrity is a great cruise line. Anybody else here that

by saying- "Why are you bashing other cruise lines! " but I'm not sure that you'd appreciate the humor....:D

Sometimes ya' just gotta sigh and move on. I have so many positive 'relationships' with people from these boards that I REFUSE to let a few who rant ruin my fun.

So, for the record, post what you want, and read what you can stand, but know that I, for one, appreciate your presence here.

thank you C 2 C, I forwarded them to my home email and hope to ponder them further and hopefully keep me from putting my foot in my mouth at least part of the time.

Sorry to hear you are feeling low. But my feeling is if someone is truly your friend, even if they don't agree with your opinion, they will move past it and realize they still care about the WHOLE person you are. Hope everything works out.

Last year we cruised and met again some wonderful cruisemates. He told me how he had lalyed golf with someone for over 20 years. While discussing a certain politician of his own political leaning, he let slip one negative aspect of that party's administration. They have not spoken again since.

I love to argue politics... from any side from any part of the world. Some people truly believe in "their way or the highway." If their is no room for differences of opinion in a friendship, it is not a friendship. True friends like one another DESPITE their faults.

It is horrible to live in a world when one is despised for what one expresses.

Hope this is not too serious a post.... that is why I posted the "thinkers" above
