We are going on a Viking Grand European Tour leaving Budapest on August 12th. Does anyone who has done that cruise have copies of the daily program? The schedule would give us an idea about how much time we will have in the cities. Thank you.

Hi there!

My husband and I are on the same river cruise on August 12th, we arrive in Budapest August 9th. This is our first river cruise, so sorry we don't have a timetable as such. We have received our docs have you? We are coming from Alberta, Canada - how about you?

So glad that we will all be together. My husband and I have done the Rhine and I did the Danube Christmas Markets with 3 girlfriends. I hope you will enjoy it as much as we do. We are going with friends who have never done a river cruise. We live in NC and are coming to Budapest early afternoon of the 11th. Looking forward to meeting you. We are Pam and Pat Bello. Our flight gets in about 1 pm and we have transfers to the ship through Viking. You will love Budapest. See you on the 11th!

We are Marion and Joe Schafer. We are doing Budapest on our own from the 9th. I do believe we depart on the Gefjon on the 12th. Looking forward to meeting you and your friends. We winter in Gilbert, Arizona so have lots of American friends and sure have room for a few more :-). Keep in touch.

We must be on different ships because we leave Budapest on the Aegir. Wish we were on the same ship.

Thank you so much. We're first time River Cruisers and will be flying to Budapest 1 week from today and boarding Viking Gefjon on July 15.

This was our first river cruise also. We had a wonderful time.

Great crew and fabulous food.

So much to see and do. 14 days just flew by.

The only time you felt the ship move was in a lock when a wall got bumped.

All the best in your travels.

Thx for the detailed itinerary. We are on the same cruise departing Budapest on July 22.

Family will be in Nuremberg the same day we are and I was hoping to get together with them. However, I see we won't arrive until the afternoon and then get on the tour right away and don't return until 5. I called Viking and they said that our visitors can't pay for the tour and join us. So, the best option is to join them in the evening. This is a bummer as that was the one evening the entertainment looked ok.

Thoughts?

Does you know where the ship docks in Nuremberg?

Vienna we did the Mozart & Strauss Concert and Schoenbrunn Palace.

Nuremberg we did the WW2 Tour.

Bamberg we did the Franconia Countryside Tour.

Wurzburg we did the Rothenburg ob der Tauber Tour.

Koblenz we did the Moselle Excursion.

Cologne we did the Cologne Beer Culture & Dinner.

Kinderdijk we did the Dutch Cheese Maker.

All of the standard and optional tours we took were wonderful and educational. The tour guides were exceptional with high praise to the WW2 Tour guide in Nuremberg. Those Alsvin passengers who took different excursions than us had high praise for theirs also. I don’t think you could go wrong with any choice.

We were scheduled to take the Bavarian Cruise & Baroque Town Scharding excursion in Passau. The Captain decided to cancel that tour and start the journey to Regensburg early. His concern was a low bridge between Passau and Regensburg. It rained quite a bit up river and his concern was an ever raising water level under that bridge. It was close but we passed under it. The Captain made the correct call. Crew members told us that subsequent ships could not pass until the water dropped.

For those passengers concerned with mobility, Viking organized a leisure group for the standard tours.

The ship location is printed at the bottom of the Viking Daily’s. I forget the exact dates but on more than one instance the Alsvin would drop off passengers at one location so they could start their excursion and then pick everybody up at another location. This practice maximized time. For Nuremberg, I know we were dropped off at Roth. I don’t remember where we were picked up. Sorry!

Thanks for your reply...

Do you feel the optional tours enhanced your trip...

Or did you see others not doing optionals and not missing them.

The reason for my question is that I have taken some land tours and did all the optionals and came home exhausted..

But again I don't want to miss exceptional excursions.

If you don't do optionals...what are you doing?

I will read over the optional tours you took. We already did book the Rothenburg tour on another's advice. We are also probably going to do the concert and the Cologne pub tour.

I thank everyone who has experience with river cruising for their opinions. This is our first.

I'm also curious if, in talking with others onboard, you heard if they were happy with the "included" tours or felt they missed something by not booking the "optional" tours. Adding up the cost for the optional tours you did would be a little over $1000 for both of us.

As a first timer to Viking it was hard to find info on what the "included" excursions were or to know the daily schedules. Thank you so much for providing such great information. :)

The optional tours did enhance our trip. I did not have a conversation with anybody who spoke ill of an excursion.

For instance, The Mozart & Strauss concert was 2 hours long.

They started out with Mozart:

Ouverture Le nozze di Figaro

Crude! Perche finora

Fluteconcert

Aria Hai gia vinta

Franz Schubert - Symphonie Nr. 5 B-Dur, 1. Satz

Turkish march

**Intermission**

Johann Strauss:

Ouverture The beautiful Galathee

Tritsch Tratsch Polka, op. 214

Aria of Adele

Under thunder and lightning

Wine, wife and singing

Hungarian dance Nr. 5 (Brahms)

Vienna blood

Blue Danube Waltz, op 314

Radetzky March, op.228

I am sure that this is subject to change but this was our experience. Just wonderful! This is from the actual program.

If you are not doing the optional tours, you can do the standard city walk tour or just stay on the ship.

This was our first river cruise and our first time in the respective countries. The reality is that this is a forced march. That is not a complaint. How could we just not see as much as we could? Sure it costs money but life is too short. For us the extra cost was worth it.

And we have not talked about the wonderful meals prepared by Chef Jakub and his staff.

We had Surf & Turf one evening.

Note that some sights/trips are not available on every sailing. For instance I wanted the optional Budapest market tour, should be today, first full day in Budapest, but market is closed on Sundays -- so not possible.

Tour director told me that the Viking GET departs EVERY day, and in both directions!

There are six Viking ships moored by Chain Bridge Saturday, one, Freya departed today, Sunday morning

On Viking Skadi, Budapest

No way we would just stay on the ship. We've booked all the included tours and will add a couple of optional tours. I think my expectation might have been a bit off when it came to what the included tours/excursions were. We'll go and do as much as we can. This is definitely a trip of a lifetime.

We leave tomorrow for Budapest and I'm more than excited. In doing my last minute research I just found that the Red Bull Air Races.......with the competition over the Danube.......are July 16 and 17. We board July 15 and overnight. Might have front row seats for this.

Thanks, again, for all the information.

I hope you get to see the planes, they are erecting grandstands along the waterfront by the chain bridge which planes will fly underneath.

But, as per ,y separate thread about this, boats will not be moored in the usual locations by the chain bridge but some way out.

We saw the planes on Friday....when they were practicing. On Saturday it rained and I'm not sure if they had the race or not. With the race scheduled for Saturday bridges were closed and the included tour was modified. Luckily we walked up to Castle Hill the day before and saw Fisherman's Bastion and Matthias Church. The tour didn't get there.

We arrive in Budapest on Aug 11th and overnight on the Agar before sailing on the 12th. Which optional tours did you do and what did you think of those? what was your overall impression of the cruise. I did the Danube Christmas Market cruise a few years ago in record snow fall and am looking forward to seeing the sights without all of the snow.
