Follow-up question to the LOUD BB King thread

I'm a classical music lover and we both enjoy sitting the the Explorer's Lounge listening to Adagio. Needless to say, I was thrilled to hear that there will be the Lincoln Center section of the Music Walk on the Koningsdam . While we would have enjoyed the BB King group if it weren't so loud and in the main theater, I'm concerned with its proximity to the classical venue.

Does anyone who has sailed on the Koningsdam have any experience with this ?

Just re-read my post and realized it was not very clear. The classical music show and BB King are at different times and don't overlap so no noise pollution between the two

As a classical music lover the disappointment will be that the Lincoln Centre group is amplified. They are excellent musicians and, in that space there is no need that we could see for amplification. We prefer to hear classical music with the instruments as they should sound and found there was some distortion due to the amplification. But given their talent and range of performance pieces, they are still worth attending.

Well said! One of the worst things to ever happen to music was the invention of the loudspeaker.:) I almost never attend any of the "big shows" on ships because the performers are already screaming at us, yet the producers feel a need to amplify it. When I first started attending live theatre 50 years ago there was never any amplification except in one of those huge barns that aren't really proper theatres. Now it is rare to be able to hear the spoken word or songs without it coming through a speaker, even in smaller theatres.

 

Cunard has more classical music than any other line in my experience. It is rare that any of it is amplified. Occasionally in the large Royal Court Theatre of Queen Mary 2 there has been some gentle amplification of a classical concert, but not too often. The harpist or string quartet can be heard as they were intended to be.

We were on the Premier Cruise of the Koningsdam . The musicians were great but due to a major design error , I think there is a lot of interference from the casino sounds coming down the new stairway between the floors . We did not experience noise interference from the BB King group BUT BBKing was much , much too loud after the first couple of reasonable nights . We just did not want to sit there anymore . I was wondering who controlled the sound levels BB or the Koningsdam staff ??

We felt sorry for the excellent musicians from the Lincoln Centre . I have heard rumors that the big stairway between the two levels will be deleted on the Nieuw Statendam ! I guess we were not the only ones that complained

Not just rumours Tony, indeed HAL have made public that the adjustments to the design on board the 2nd Pinnacle class will include removal of the stairway between the two levels on Nieuw Statendam. They are also looking at better emphasis on the new dining fascilities and maybe adding an extra one.

We attended several sets at BB Kings, one concert at Lincoln Center Stage and a couple of World Stage shows. No noise issues at all except rude people carrying on a full blown conversation right behind us at the World Stage one night. Pointed looks and glares did not shut them up so we just left. Not the ship's fault.

We went to several Lincoln Center performances and were disturbed by the amount of noise coming from the bar opposite and from people just walking and talking nearby. They did put up a small sign but it certainly did not solve the problem.

Thanks for all the replies! I, too, am appalled that the classical group is amplified. Are the sound engineers too young and/or untrained to know that those instruments do not need any help. But it seems that the louder anyone screams, the more applause they receive. I find that I nearly always have to mute the National Anthem when watching a sporting event on television or, if I'm at a live event, have to bite my cheek so I don't groan out loud. If my child were still young enough to be deciding on a career, I'd recommend she go into the hearing aid business.

 

As far as the rude, loud folks at the bar, that is HAL's fault for locating a bar there. But we've noticed the same many times right in the Explorer's Lounge. Of course folks leaving the dining room will be chatting but, to their credit, they usually stop talking when passing the lounge. People sitting right in the lounge and talking and laughing away are a different matter. Adagio often doesn't have the greatest English skills and when they have to compete with rude chatter, it makes matters much more difficult.
