Dancing on Emerald Princess

First time on Emerald Princess, we are avid ballroom & rock n roll dancers, are there any good dance floors on this ship to dance?

I see there's a disco, but as on other cruises, find this is only usually for techno, jumping around type dancing.....unless they do a 50's or 60's theme night.

QM2 had the biggest best ballroom on any ship we've been on, but even in our late 50's early 60's we are way too young to ever go on that ship again

You can't beat Cunard for dance floors! I'd disagree with the age issue though as we are early 40's and felt very comfortable on board (and we are young at heart, not fuddy duddies!)

When we were on on Emerald in May there seemed to be various venues offering dancing with differinf theme nights - I. e 50s and 60s, 70s nights a d ABBA and Beatles nights. Skywallkers seemed to be quote lively well into the early hours!! Club Fusion and Wheelhouse Bar were also popular earlier in the evening. Bear in mind, if you are travelling during the school holidays, then there will be a lot of teenagers on board and the music later in the evening may not suit everyone. Howrver, if I remember rightly, there is a minimum age limit for admission to Skywalkers - not sure if it is 18 or 21 years.

Hope this helps.

We were on the Emerald this past June. There was ballroom style dancing in the Wheelhouse Bar starting around 9pm. Explorer's Lounge and Club Fusion had dancing with a party band that played all styles of music. There were also some hour long session of recorded strict tempo dance music. There were some Piazza parties with some dancing, as well as deck parties, which included lively music as well as line dances. Skywalker's Nightclub opens late evening and has a DJ. The music had certain themes. Check the Princess Patter each day for times and venues.

And we do like to dance.

Emerald Dance Floors -

Four primary dance venues.

Wheelhouse - nice almost square wooden floor (band stand take a bite out of it) - larger than most wheelhouses, but easily crowded. You can pack quite a few couples if people follow social dance protocols - we've had 12 couples max doing traveling type dances (waltz - foxtrot) - less if there are some inexperienced couples or the semi-pros. This is typically the ballroom dance floor, however, since the introduction of the Salty Dog in the wheelhouse, the music during dinner time is typically a solo guitarist mainly for listening. (However, on the Ruby in 2014, we danced a lot during this time to Danny Rodriquez, a solo guitarist with a lot of electronics and a tendency to play a lot of night club, rhumba and waltz type dances.)

Explorers - nice semi-circular wooden floor. larger than wheelhouse although on the Emerald they have added a row of chairs right at the edge of the dance floor. This restricts movement onto the carpet for those quick escape maneuvers. You can easily do a 5 line line dance with about 20 people in the bandstand line and 5 in the forward line. We've seen as many as 30-40 couples on a good R&R night freestyling. This is where the R&R band will mainly reside.

Fusion - Our favorite. A huge oddly shaped wooden floor, but gloriously large. Neat little corners to tuck into during in-place dancing, but great to waltz around. There is typically a few nights of DJ'ed ballroom here, but the R&R band will show up as well. Depending on the CD, they will have the theme nights (Disco, 50's and 60's, country, etc.) in this venue.

Skywalkers - Glass floored, rectangular, disco complete with mirror balls, a huge sound system. All of the music here will be DJ'ed after 2200. Needless to say, we didn't make it up here more than a few times, and the dance floor can get pretty sticky since the Elite lounge is held here from 1700 to 1900 and you really have to scrub to get that guacamole out of the seams in the glass tiles...

On Deck - During Sailaway and Deck parties (mainly in the Caribbean), the R&R band plays up on deck and people can dance on the carpet or the tile. its a lot of fun, but very hard on the knees and ankles.

Piazza - During the Crown Tahiti cruise last year we had a three piece Mariachi band that was great to Latin dance to in the Piazza. The R&R band also does Captain's night and the New Year's party in the Piazza. Unfortunately, for us, the tile floor is just too hard on the knees and ankles to make it a regular venue and the typically band or music in the Piazza is not for dancing - but there are exceptions.

The Emerald in June/July had one party band, the R&R Band, which mainly played in Explorer's. (Starwave - 5 piece - lead female vocalist, drummer, base guitar, lead guitar, piano/keyboard). Although not as wide a repertoire as some of the R&R bands on Princess, their music was 50's through 90's, lots of opportunities for Hustles, Night Club 2 Steps, Cha-Cha's. Some waltzes. They mainly played in Explorer's but did do some gigs in Fusion.

The Rhumba Duo (female vocalist with keyboard and backing tracks from her partner) was in the wheelhouse after 1700 on most nights. Primarily ballroom with a few modern songs fitting for latin and ballroom style dances - Rhumbas, Cha-Chas, Foxtrot, Waltz, a few nightclubs, and a few Tangos.

There were more than a few nights in June/July in which we could not find a venue to dance in. On a many sea day cruise, like HI or a T/A, that would have been very bad, but in a port intensive cruise like the Baltic or Norway, it was ok to relax at night because of the go-go-go of the ports during the day.
