Mykonos beaches

We would like to spend some time on the beach when in Mykonos, and leave enough time to look around the town later.

What beaches are near to the cruise ships docking area, and can they be reached by public transport.

If so where would we catch the bus, or, are there any within walking distance ?

Thanks.

Some ships dock. Some tender in. If you are lucky, your ship will tender in as you get dropped off right downtown.

I know there is a beach you can catch a bus too but I don't have the details. However, if you are not looking for anything too fancy, simply walk to the left of the town (as you are facing it). There is a decent looking beach right there. And you'll be only minutes away from being able to stroll through the town later.

We've been to two different beaches when we've called in Mykonos, each time via public transport. The problem is that there are two bus stations, one of which is much easier to find than the other.

The easiest beach to get to, if you are docked, is Paradise Beach, purely because the bus goes from the bus station right where the shuttle bus drops you. Just aim to the right of where the bus drops you and look for the sign saying Paradise on the bus. If you are tendered it's a short walk along the sea front to the same bus station It's about a 15-20 minute drive. Paradise is a 'beach club' with a lively beach with a number of bars/shops/cafes all the way along, offering loungers and shades for hire. If you want a quieter experience, or just to put your towel on the sand aim for the extreme right of the beach as you are facing the sea.

The other beach which is probably more 'family-friendly' is Platis Gialos. This can be reached by bus from the other bus station. If you search on Google Maps on Mykonos for 'Southern Bus Station' you will see where this is. It's only a short walk from the centre of town but difficult to describe how to get there are the streets are so small and winding. Print off a map. Platis Gialos is a lovely sheltered bay fronted by bars and tavernas offering loungers and shades, there's also a small supermarket there too. The further left you go, as you're facing the sea, the quieter it gets. Again it's about a 15-20 minute journey

Just off the Norwegian Jade and visited Mykonos. We were not tendered, but had a free shuttle bus into town. Once in town, there are companies offering transfers by minibus to super paradise beach. Alternatively, there is a little beach in Mykonos town, you're probrably better off going to super paradise beach.

We were a full day in Mykonos, so in the morning we explored the town and located and the bus stop. After lunch we went to the agios ionnis beach to snorkel and relax.

Walk up the hill towards the windmills and keep them on your right.

That road is called Xenias and will lead you to the square with the busstop.

When you see the gelateria I scream on your left side, you're almost there.

Make sure to stop there on your way back, they have great ice (s)cream :-)

The bus costs 1.8€ one way and you can buy your ticket at the booth or on the bus.

We went to agios ioannis, the bus drops you off at the end point (rocky beach) with no facilities. You can ask to be dropped off at the beach area, but you need to walk down the hill to the beach. The bus stops in front of Ornos beach (more facilities, but more crowdy). Just look at googlemaps which area you prefer.

When we visited Mykonos, we were fortunate that it was a Sunday and only two small cruise ships were in port that day. Not being over-run with thousands and thousands of cruise ship tourists was a nice plus/benefit. We walked around the charming town area with their narrow passage ways in the morning. Then in the afternoon, we got a lower-cost rental car to do some exploring. That worked well. Public transit can be nice, but having the freedom and flexible to go where you want to see was a nice plus. Below are some visual results as "proof/evidence".

THANKS! Enjoy! Terry in Ohio

Did a June 7-19, 2011, cruise from Barcelona that had stops in Villefranche, ports near Pisa and Rome, Naples, Kotor, Venice and Dubrovnik. Dozens of nice visuals with key highlights, tips, comments, etc. We are now at 217,120 views for this live/blog re-cap, including much on wonderful Barcelona. Check these postings and added info at:

On the opposite side of the Mykonos village on the island, here's a sampling of the beachside activities. This includes Agrari, Elia and the long sweeping Kalafatis beach that has become famous to wind surfers. The second picture is from Elia Beach. We got an inexpensive rental car to visit these beaches areas and explore the other parts far away from the main village.:

We will be tendering next year and there will be two other ships in port that day. Last time in Mykonos we went to Psarou beach, about 30 minutes from the port (we were docked). We would like to go back to another beach and perhaps see some of the town. Any suggestions for something not too far but has some places for a nice sea side lunch?
