BrandoMan...they will sail to Canada if they have too...

I have heard some boston trips went North..instead of Southeast to Bermuda

I don't think they'll have to do that based on the current path, I certainly hope not, Canada is fine but not really what I have in mind lol.

But I know they'll do whatever is safest for the company and passengers.

Im on the same cruise, from what I've read, we should be ok getting there, maybe hit a little choppy stuff.

In Bermuda its about 30-40% chance of rain each day, but nothing to worry about.

Getting back, it will depend on how the current tropical depressions and storms develop over the next week or so.

I am on this cruise too... called NCL today and they said either we would be on board and fine or they will call each individual passenger and make arrangements and give shipboard credits (???). SOOOOOO... I'll be there with fingers crossed and Dramamine.

I personally figured the hurricane would be closer to bermuda if anything, not right off the coast of NY lol.

I have no problem with the issues arising from travelling through bad weather, my main concern having never cruised before, was just to ensure we'd still have a vacation.

I think if you book this time of the year, you have to understand that hurricanes, tropical storms, etc. happen.

YEP... Understood that when I booked... but what is funny is never thought about a Hurricane affecting NYC this early in Hurricane season. Was more worried about my house in Fort Myers than my cruise. Get it both times in two different locations in the same storm. OH Well.

Hey All. We are cruising the Breakaway again this weekend 9/4

Though I have cruised many times, the couple of times I have been in storms with high seas haven't been pleasant. I am a bit concerned about all the activity in the Atlantic. Has anyone heard anything? Norwegian says most likely we will miss it all but looking at the weather channel isn't making me feel better

Thats funny, Im pretty sure that's what the reps are told to say! Don't think were missing it. Last November we were in very bad seas and the BA handled them very well. Hope thats a bit comforting!

At the present time NOAA has the seas in NY at about 19 to 26 feet.

don't want to sound like an ahole...but when you booked the cruise. did you not know about hurricane season?

9/18 breakaway will be my 10 cruise....1/2 of them been during hurricane season going to Bermuda. You get a great deal $ but you roll the dice on the weather.

Im sure she's not looking for a lecture. A simple answer would be nice.

We're keeping our fingers crossed on this one. It looks like we will leave Boston in time to miss Hermine here, and we're hoping to get to Bermuda without incident. With hurricanes and tropical storms you never know. My cousin and 3 of her friends from Baltimore will be joining us for their first trip to this beautiful island. I don't want ANYTHING to interfere with their trip. I've packed plenty of Bonine just in case.

We hope to be celebrating my 70th in LaCucina tomorrow night.;) My mouth is watering just thinking about it!

Shipboard credits for a future cruise or for the cruise Sunday? Ive made peace with the fact that we won't have a pleasant ride going wherever it is we go, I just wanna go haha. I asked some weather people on twitter and they were like cruising is a bad idea lol. I'm like thanks, I don't have much of a choice.

Last year in October we were on a Breakaway cruise to Bermuda faced with somewhat similar circumstances. The ship did not depart NY at 4 pm on Sunday but instead was held at the pier for 9 hours, departing at 1 am Monday morning, when they felt it was safe to sail. The ride down was a bit rough, but nothing the ship and most passengers couldn't handle. We were given an OBC of $50 for that cruise as courtesy compensation for the disruption to the schedule. Obviously how they handle the situation this week will be a last minute decision dictated by the weather conditions.

What happens in that situation? Do you stay on the ship in the port or just show up later and check in later?

Everyone was informed of the schedule change at check in. You had to stay on the ship because after the scheduled departure time port security personnel were not available to check your documentation and allow you back into the cruise terminal. There was also the possibility they would sail earlier than 1 am if the weather cleared sooner. Other than the casino and shops being closed, shipboard life went on as it would have if we were underway.

My boyfriend is a deck hand on the Breakaway. I just sent him a message to see how the swells are...i will post back here as soon as I hear from him..usually @ 10 pm ET. When you get on the ship, be certain to say hello to him on the Pool Deck...Turnell from St Lucia..full of smiles! he will try to help you with your pool chairs if you need some saved :) 10 years with NCL and he is still smiling!

update: the breakaway will be departing bermuda early tomorrow at 9am local time due to storm.

NCL's live webcam link are still offline - been that way since Sunday :( including the BA. Tune to PortBermudawebcam dot com and watch the live action, late night (11:30 PM Atlantic Time, 1 hour ahead of Eastern DT) party & dance music on H2O on deck 16 AFT, you can hear it as the livecam panning around Dockyard.

Waves forecast for the Atlantic crossing doesn't look bad, 10' to 15' waves flowing south to north in that area - leaving early will give the Captain & ship plenty of time to sail further north - as an option - to stay away from "Hermine" and perhaps dock early ?? Although, based on the current storm track models, effects of this TS will be seen & felt as early as mid/late Saturday in the NY area ... mostly wind, rain, tidal waves & flash flooding.

Those embarking this Sunday afternoon - Hermine will possibly be hovering & spinning slowly off shores near the NY metro area - should be interesting to see how the Captain will plot & run his ship - maybe, hug close to the shore & go south, away from the TS moving northeast - before turning eastward to Bermuda on Monday. Pack those motion sickness remedies, whatever works for you & start early - keep your eyes on the ever changing weather forecast, by this time tomorrow or Saturday morning, the storm's strength and more precise model for the tracking movement should be quite reliable & accurate. But, mother nature has been known to play tricks and fool everyone - hope for the best.

Wish all a safe & smooth (as best as it can be) voyage ... the GEM will be back on Saturday & hightail out of NY quickly to New England/Canada.

Thanks for this great update mking. A beautiful sailaway is out of the question for us. Just hoping the captain has a strategy and a way to make things work for us. I was thinking depending where the storm is, maybe he'd try going north a bit then coming back around south to Bermuda?

But this is all new to me. As you can see if you've read my previous posts, I've spent all night just hoping my vacation isn't canceled.

Side note, I feel terrible for being so selfish. So many are dealing with way higher stakes. After sandy, I sympathize and hope people evacuated when told to.

Called NCL this morning and they obviously had many other callers asking about the situation as well, but the customer service people basically said "no news is good news". I contacted PR and now there is a notice about the Breakaway on the website that says everything is running on schedule. The PR lady that emailed me back was trying to be very reassuring letting me know that the Captain and the USCG would look at everything to make sure they would do everything to make sure everyone was safe.

I imagine that we will be able to get on as normal but that we might be sitting in port longer since Hermine is supposed to be sitting just off the coast at 2pm tomorrow, I can't see them having the port open with that if they've already got a state of emergency, beaches are closed, and airports are closed. I just hope the subways stay open until we get to the port!

Oh, and my in-laws had to cancel- unrelated to weather, but with the insurance through NCL, you don't get your money back due to a hurricane- 75% cruise credit and you eat the other 25% as a loss...

... I can't see them having the port open with that if they've already got a state of emergency ...

Calm down & chill - have a drink ... of whatever beverage of choice like iced coffee. Ship will sail and Bermuda is waiting

Relax & go easy, please. It's nice & sunny now, it's windy down here on the Jersey shores where we are "hunkering down for the Labor Day weekend storm" that's expected - forecast - to turn into a cyclone. Not the end of the world and not a major hurricane, and, there is no state of emergency in NYC ... I just doubled check my messages & alerts, just lots of precautionary measures and preparedness going on - lessons learned from Sandy almost 4 years ago.

NYC will get some rain, wind & high surf & rip currents, nothing serious - from the latest data available/seen/analyzed by the experts - subways will run & stations are open, airports are open & I am not seeing preemptive flight cancellations - no insiders news/alerts from nephews working @JFK. Traffic is lighter than average in & around the city.

Plus, I just checked: Breakaway has been in range of AIS tracking and data on MarineTraffic showing her following X's Summit, doing 18 nm and likely arrival time around 11:30 PM tonight (maybe sooner or a little later ... folks will disembark (very likely) in the morning - followed by embarkation in mid/late Sunday morning.

Obviously, forecasts are changing every few hours or sooner as warranted, plan for & expect a choppy ride and motion - this is hurricane season.

P.S. BrandoMan13 - (and, others) like some of us "regulars" sailing out of NY said, ship will sail and captain will plot the best & safe course headings to provide all the least rocky ride. I see the ship leaving right on schedule or possibly earlier, if they could - low tide is NOT a problem, never was for the BA as she's been homeport in NYC for the past 3 years - and looking like going south & hugging the coast would be a best bet, before turning east for Bermuda - plenty of time to reach the islands by Wednesday, she usually only need to run or 3 out of 4 engines - by going around ... will just burn more fuel & cost $$$$. Just remember safety is always the priority followed by comfort. Would be cool to sail her running at her top speed of 22 nm+ into/around the storm ... so, get those pictures & moments captured and shared, could be news worth for CNN :D

I understand your anxiety, but think you can relax a bit. This is not Superstorm Sandy, so the subways should be fine--even in Sandy, only a few lines had problems. The forecast for the morning is not bad yet. And airports are much more subject to closure than cruise ship ports or subways. Beach closures have even less relevance to port closures--the risk of a child being swept by a riptide has nothing to do with an immense cruise ship facing hazards.

I would also not count on their trying to wait for Hermine to move out, as that may take a day or more.

Bring you seasickness meds just in case, but I think it will work out fine.

Hmmm, we are in New Jersey, no state of emergency

here yet, and airport is also open, weather here

right now is beautiful. Just get on board,

and let the Captain and his crew do the rest.

No sense worrying about something

you can't controll!

Everything will be fine
