Unfortunately does not work on Freedom. Only works on Quantum class and Harmony.

I'm wondering how cruisers keep in touch with family other than email while aboard the ship. If I want to use Skype, do I need the surf and stream Voom package, or just surf?

We don't. They have an emergency contact number just in case. Otherwise, I can stand not getting in touch with the family for a week or so. What did we do before the internet? Think of it as an adventure. Have you ever listened to the cell phone conversations that people on a ship have with their families. Pure claptrap.

we leave the cell phones at home. I am on vacation and not available for any reason! ya know, the way it was for the previous 70 years of travel.

I purchased the surf package at 30% off and found that my cell has wifi calling. I'm set to check in with husband and kids back home.

Ships typically use satellite internet while at sea. While the technology is improving it is inherently terrible compared to your typical at home internet. The signal has to bounce around on satellites in space and that takes a long time. Things like Skype and voice calls have significant delays making conversations difficult. It's really only good for emails/text.

 

When ships are close to land they often switch over to cellular networks which aren't much better than what you can get on your phone.
