Thorncroft Posted October 24, 2017 #26 Share Posted October 24, 2017 I don't think that you are required to register hobby drones with the FAA, anymore. The law was recently changed. There is still a laundry list of rules that must be followed. Here is the notice from the FAA regarding unmanned aircraft: https://www.faa.gov/uas/faqs/
Thorncroft Posted October 24, 2017 #27 Share Posted October 24, 2017 I miss the days when people went on vacation to get away from their electronics. Whatever happened to going on vacation and just enjoying the environment (use your mental pictures to remember things by) Those days are gone and they're never coming back. I hope that you can find the solace and closure that you long for.

Whatever happened to going on vacation and just enjoying the environment (use your mental pictures to remember things by) For many hobbyists taking their drones to be able to create stunning videos in the beautiful locations we cruise to is as exciting as a zip line or other excursions. Everyone vacations for different reasons some like just to lay on a beach while others want to do extreme adventures. The key word there ... different. I do not own a drone. I have no inkling to ever own 1. But I admire the videos I have viewed from drone enthusiasts. Pops, Esq. Posted October 24, 2017 #29 Share Posted October 24, 2017 I am amazed at how often you post and are completely wrong. We should create a drinking game where everyone takes a shot when you post invalid or outright wrong answers. I'm guessing we will exceed the Cheers 15 pd limit on a daily basis. The angle is so wide on these cameras that you would literally have to be within feet of someone to make out their features if photographed. I just don't see why people are so offended by these flying cameras. You are more likely to be photographed unintentionally by someone else's 35mm camera on any vacation with more detail than one of these drones. They don't have a zoom capability. iamchrisstone Posted October 25, 2017 #33 Share Posted October 25, 2017 On my last cruise on the Valor I took my drone. I flew it at all 3 ports: Nassau, Freeport and Half Moon Cay. Freeport, they ran me off. They told me that I could go inland but not on the port. Nassau the security actually hung around me and talked. They liked it. With that being said, I'm about to sail on the Sunshine going back to Nassau so I contacted the government over there and they do have laws. You have to let them know the purpose, serial number, registration with FAA, etc. Half Moon Cay I went into the main area and flew it all over. No problems. Below I will try to attache a few pics. I have more if you guys want to see more. You can NOT fly from the ship at any time. Ive been tempted to take my Phantom 3 Standard since i never use it any more to try to fly from my balcony while at sea, that way if I lose it, it's not too big of a loss. But I've chickened out LOL. You will be subject to civil and criminal penalties if you meet the criteria to register an unmanned aircraft and do not register. Supposedly you no longer have to register hobby drones as long as they are not used commercially. https://www.recode.net/2017/5/19/15663436/us-drone-registration-rules-faa Do I need permission from the FAA to fly a UAS for recreation or as a hobby? There are two ways for recreational or hobby UAS fliers to operate in the National Airspace System in accordance with the law and/or FAA regulations. Each of the two options has specific requirements that the UAS operator must follow. The decision as to which option to follow is up to the individual operator. Option #1. Fly in accordance with the Special Rule for Model Aircraft (Public Law 112-95 Section 336). Under this rule, operators must: Fly for hobby or recreational purposes only Follow a community-based set of safety guidelines Fly the UAS within visual line-of-sight Give way to manned aircraft Provide prior notification to the airport and air traffic control tower, if one is present, when flying within 5 miles of an airport Fly UAS that weigh no more than 55 lbs. unless certified by a community-based organization Option #2. Fly under the FAA's Small UAS Rule (14 CFR part 107). Under this rule, operators must: Register their UAS with the FAA as a "non-modeler" Obtain an FAA Remote Pilot Certificate Follow the operational requirements (PDF) of Part 107 My son's drone won't even lift off the ground within a few miles of an airport unless he enters a code. That article is out-of-date... try this one... https://www.recode.net/2017/12/12/16766554/us-congress-trump-drone-registration-faa Turns out, you’re going to have to register your small drones with the U.S. government after all A bill to be signed by the president restores the FAA’s requirement. Owners of small drones are going to have to resume registering their craft with the U.S. government. A bill to be signed into law by President Donald Trump later today restores the registration rules that were put into place in 2015 by the Federal Aviation Administration — but later tossed by a federal judge. Specifically, the FAA’s rules — crafted with the support of the drone industry, including companies like Amazon and Google — required owners of small drones to attach an ID number to their unmanned craft. That would be linked to their personal information, like their names and addresses, which they would provide to the U.S. government.
