Taking a drone?

I miss the days when people went on vacation to get away from their electronics. Whatever happened to going on vacation and just enjoying the environment (use your mental pictures to remember things by)

Those days are gone and they're never coming back. I hope that you can find the solace and closure that you long for.

For many hobbyists taking their drones to be able to create stunning videos in the beautiful locations we cruise to is as exciting as a zip line or other excursions. Everyone vacations for different reasons some like just to lay on a beach while others want to do extreme adventures. The key word there ... different.

I do not own a drone. I have no inkling to ever own 1. But I admire the videos I have viewed from drone enthusiasts.

I am amazed at how often you post and are completely wrong.

We should create a drinking game where everyone takes a shot when you post invalid or outright wrong answers.

I'm guessing we will exceed the Cheers 15 pd limit on a daily basis.

Drink double when s/he uses two words or less...

Thank you. My thoughts exactly. The angle is so wide on these cameras that you would literally have to be within feet of someone to make out their features if photographed. I just don't see why people are so offended by these flying cameras. You are more likely to be photographed unintentionally by someone else's 35mm camera on any vacation with more detail than one of these drones. They don't have a zoom capability.

On my last cruise on the Valor I took my drone. I flew it at all 3 ports: Nassau, Freeport and Half Moon Cay. Freeport, they ran me off. They told me that I could go inland but not on the port. Nassau the security actually hung around me and talked. They liked it. With that being said, I'm about to sail on the Sunshine going back to Nassau so I contacted the government over there and they do have laws. You have to let them know the purpose, serial number, registration with FAA, etc.

Half Moon Cay I went into the main area and flew it all over. No problems.

Below I will try to attache a few pics. I have more if you guys want to see more.

You can NOT fly from the ship at any time. Ive been tempted to take my Phantom 3 Standard since i never use it any more to try to fly from my balcony while at sea, that way if I lose it, it's not too big of a loss. But I've chickened out LOL.

I don't think that you are required to register hobby drones with the FAA, anymore. The law was recently changed. There is still a laundry list of rules that must be followed. Here is the notice from the FAA regarding unmanned aircraft:

https://www.faa.gov/uas/faqs/

Yes you do... https://registermyuas.faa.gov/

Do I need to register my Unmanned Aircraft?

You need to register your aircraft if it weighs between 0.55 lbs.(250 grams) and up to 55 lbs. (25 kg).

You will be subject to civil and criminal penalties if you meet the criteria to register an unmanned aircraft and do not register.

Supposedly you no longer have to register hobby drones as long as they are not used commercially.

Do I need permission from the FAA to fly a UAS for recreation or as a hobby?

There are two ways for recreational or hobby UAS fliers to operate in the National Airspace System in accordance with the law and/or FAA regulations. Each of the two options has specific requirements that the UAS operator must follow. The decision as to which option to follow is up to the individual operator.

Option #1. Fly in accordance with the Special Rule for Model Aircraft (Public Law 112-95 Section 336). Under this rule, operators must:

  • Fly for hobby or recreational purposes only
  • Follow a community-based set of safety guidelines
  • Fly the UAS within visual line-of-sight
  • Give way to manned aircraft
  • Provide prior notification to the airport and air traffic control tower, if one is present, when flying within 5 miles of an airport
  • Fly UAS that weigh no more than 55 lbs. unless certified by a community-based organization

Option #2. Fly under the FAA's Small UAS Rule (14 CFR part 107). Under this rule, operators must:

My son's drone won't even lift off the ground within a few miles of an airport unless he enters a code.

Turns out, you’re going to have to register your small drones with the U.S. government after all

A bill to be signed by the president restores the FAA’s requirement.

Owners of small drones are going to have to resume registering their craft with the U.S. government.

A bill to be signed into law by President Donald Trump later today restores the registration rules that were put into place in 2015 by the Federal Aviation Administration — but later tossed by a federal judge.

Specifically, the FAA’s rules — crafted with the support of the drone industry, including companies like Amazon and Google — required owners of small drones to attach an ID number to their unmanned craft. That would be linked to their personal information, like their names and addresses, which they would provide to the U.S. government.

They're obviously not sports fans. Moving goal lines are not cool. LOL Doesn't change anything for us. We use drones commercially in our work, so we already have to jump through all of the hoops.

Locally, a drone pilot interfered with an ambulance helicopter. I bet there are way more irresponsible hobbyists than responsible considering how how of the photos posted can't be from drones in line of sight.

Pretty sure that I saw the watermelonqueen in one of those photos, KP. LOL

I believe you're correct Thorncroft. You can just barely make out her pouty face and tears with the ultra crisp telephoto lens.:')
