Once a day room cleaning trial.

A cruise is a singular experience. It has nothing to do with what happened last week, last year, or a decade ago. To reduce tips because you didn't get the same service you got on the last cruise is beyond ridiculous...tips are given for what you get, not withheld for what you didn't.

I can unequivocally say that my pet peeve on these boards are the comments that that start with: "I got "x" last cruise so I better get it this cruise or heads will roll".

Geesh, I got my windshield washed, my oil checked, and my gas pumped at the fuel station down the street the last time I visited it in 1966. I better get that same service, today, or I am going to raise all kinds of stink and advise everyone that I think that service station and its employees are lazy and lousy. The grocery store that has been around for upteen years and where they hauled my stuff out of the cart and then bagged it for me and escorted me to my car when I shopped there in 1980 now makes me empty my own cart, bag my own groceries, and load my car by myself. Someone should complain about how sad the "service" is at that store.

Wonder if people really want to go back to "real" cruising where rooms had two twin beds bolted to the floor, served only 3 meals a day and you were "forced" to eat at designated times. Daytime activities were shuffleboard, skeet shooting, or bingo. At night there was a piano bar and cards. But you were treated like royalty...the staff outnumbered the guests and you paid a couple of months wages for the privilege. Obviously people loved it because "nothing" has changed, or has it?

Carnival LOVES customers like you!

And so do hotels, restaurants, bars, grocery stores, boutiques, service stations...the list goes on and on. As a consumer, I "choose" where to spend my dollars and I make that choice while being totally "self-centered". I could care less what someone else's experience is....as long as my personal expectations are met and I feel I have gotten good return on my money I will continue to use goods and services. What's wrong with that mindset....

oh yes, I forget. Complainers can only be validated when the whole world agrees with them and they sway everyone over to their mindset.

It really won't matter to CCL if people cut tips. They are still ahead.

1. Stewards are assigned more rooms.

2. Stewards spend less time in each room.

3. Stewards work same hours as before. (People have claimed for years that they work 16-18 hours a day and I don't think having more cabins will ultimately lead to more hours. Maybe for a short time during the transition or some cabins getting 2x a day service.)

4. Stewards receive tips from more cabins @ less tip/cabin.

Result: CCL pays fewer stewards who each still receive relatively the same amount in tips and salary for the same amount of work. No problem for CCL, just less service for the cruiser.

And the measly amount one could save in tips by even cutting their portion in 1/2 is not worth 1/2 the service.

OK..I'll bite.

What services do people expect in the morning from a steward, and what services do they expect at night?

Personally I'm fine with my bed made in the morning, fresh towels once a day (personally I hang up wet towels after use and I wash in the shower so towels do stay clean), my trash can emptied, and bathroom surfaces given a wipe. Toilet paper kept stocked, tissues kept stocked, and (if I have detritus laying around) a quick clean up.

Don't give a hoot about ice (get my own when I need it), having covers turned down, continual fresh towels (I guess some people were never taught to hang up towels to dry), towel animals, a full time maid, someone to move my discarded clothes from chair a to b, or pick them up from the floor, someone to pick up after my kids because I'm too lazy to do so.

A few comments:

1) it has been said time and time again that this is not even happening

2) you can always gets the things you want/need if you ask for them. The staff practically bends over backwards to make guests satisfied.

That being said, I only started cruising in 2014 so I haven't noticed many of the changes, but I do know that the stewards work their butts off and deserve every penny of the gratuities. If you aren't satisfied with what is provided, feel free to spend a few hundred dollars more to sail with a higher end cruiseline. I'd rather accept a few meaningless "cutbacks" than have the fare drastically increase. I know what you're going to say...the fares HAVE increased...supply and demand, my friend.

The day I am told I am getting once a day service, my tip potion for the steward will be cut in half. I will not be negotiating with them what their job is supposed to be, or what I expect.

I already reduce the tip for the service meals they have cut out in the MDR.

Fares have nothing to do with tips. We pay these individuals to perform a service. It that service is cut ANY way, I will adjust accordingly.

The issue is that they still work the same amount of time they did before this program was implemented. They now have more cabins per steward.

Take care,

Mike

What difference is that to me?

They have more cabins and only have to do them once so they come out the same if people only tipped half of what they used to.

You know most are going to leave their tips alone and still tip the full amount so with that being said they will wind up making more money than they used to for the same amount of work.:)

We just got off the Glory yesterday. I promised Jimbo I would report on this topic after the cruise, so...

We got twice a day service, no card, no questions asked. It just happened, as on every other Carnival cruise I've been on. I was so relieved to not have to adjust gratuities. We also had an ice bucket in the room and it was filled twice a day. Thanks Carnival.

What would there be to report? The Glory was never part of the test.

...after firing half the stewards on board each ship if rolled out.

Oh, by all means, I agree with you. I don't think of this as a trial to get down to once a day service, but to try to save some work for the stewards if, and only if, the customer wanted to have only once a day service.

I think that Carnival saw where some customers thought that too much service was given and wanted only once a day service. This was a way to offer that to those who wanted it and was not a way to cram it down the throats of those who did not.

Simple put, this gives people who only want service once a day exactly that. And those that want twice a day, it is business as usual. Just ask for it and it will be given. With the exceptions ( as some posters say it has happen), that a steward has gotten snippy with them when they asked for twice a day service, and it was not warmly received. I think this is the case where the steward has been misinformed and needs to be called to the carpet.

My opinion, this is not a big conspiracy to cut services without the customer having a say.

That "theory" goes right out the window when you hear that the amount of cabins they have to service is going from 20 to 35. Which means the unemployment line for some.

Got off the Conquest October 23rd. We had twice a day cleaning without being asked. We didn't fill out any forms and we were not asked if we wanted once or twice a day. Also, we had our ice bucket filled twice a day. The stewards were great.

Next cruise is on the Glory for the Bloggers Cruise. We will see what happens.

Conquest was never part of the trial either.

So, you're going to punish the stewards for something that Carnival Corporate is doing? That doesn't seem right...

If you worked a half day because your boss told you, would you expect to get paid for a full days work?

Let the WORKFORCE complain to their bosses. 1/2 work = 1/2 pay.

Not too many people vacation at gas stations and grocery stores.

Sounds to me like you are just making up reasons to be a cheap. Your room is still being cleaned and you get everything you need. No need to punish the staff for changing policies.

Again, how is that punishment? Your cabin is cleaned once instead of twice so that's half as much so you get half the gratuity.

Room is being made up once and not twice.

No ice in the evenings or fresh towels so obviously we are getting less than before.

So you go to grocery store and they discontinue gallon size of milk and replace it with half gallon at same price. Still willing to pay the same for less?
