Best Ship/Itinerary for a cruise to Norway

Hi all,

I'm looking for opinions from those of you that have done a cruise to Norway. What cruise line do you recommend and why? What ports of call are not to be missed? Thanks in advance! Melissa

We went last summer and loved it! We were on the Star Legend, Windstar. Started in Iceland, then the Faroe Islands, 4 days in Norway, and finished in Dublin. It was a great cruise.

Did 7 days on HAL Koningsdam from Amsterdam and had a fantastic cruise ! Visited Flam, Stavanger, Kristiansand and Oslo. HAL also has 2 weeks cruises going up further North. You can also depart from Rotterdam if you like :)

Key ports of call in Norway if you are wanting the Fjords are Bergen, Flam and Gerainger. Oslo is also a good port to visit but there are not many cruises that offer that as well as the Fjords.

 

Choice of ship and cruise line is much more governed by the kind of ship that appeals to you in terms of size, entertainment, age range etc.

 

One that is different is the Hurtigruten. This used to be the mail boat providing the main transport up the West Coast of Norway round the North Cape to the Russian Border. Improved road communications are now an alternative but the Hurtigruten ship still leaves Bergen at each day. These days the ships are very smart mini-cruise ships that are small enough to get into places denied to bigger ships. You can round trip or segments.

We have done Norway twice both on smaller ships with under 700 passengers

Not to miss is going up the fjords to Flam Geiranger

 

enjoy whatever cruise you choose

Look for a ship which isn't purpose built for the Caribbean, where most of the activities are on a lido deck or round an outdoor sea screen.

Also, look for a ship which has inside spaces where you can sit out of the wind and still see the fjords through the windows- some ships are built to draw passengers into inside spaces without views; look for a ship with an inside pool, or an older ship with lots of deck space and views to the outside.

There's so many itineraries and home ports for Fjord cruising- we go from the north of England; friends fly out and go with Hurtigruten, the ferry line.
