njrover0216 Posted January 16, 2017 #1 Share Posted January 16, 2017 My family and I are currently on Magic, and they have lost GPS tracking of the boat. There are no updates on our current location and the locator maps have us incorrectly positioned. We always look forward to watching where we are, but not this time :(

mapsmith Posted January 16, 2017 #3 Share Posted January 16, 2017 You should be able to recalibrate once you are in port. GPS can be flaky depending on the type, age, and maps of the unit. Early units required recalibration whenever you went more than 600 miles from a starting point. Early units also selected the nearest satellites to get the information, whereas, more recent have gone to selecting the best connection. (Sort of like looking for a WiFi with a phone. there may be a nearby WiFi but the signal is weak, while one a little further away will have a stronger signal.) And the satellites are turned off at random intervals for software updates and so on. Most of the Satellites are actually about 25 years old and they do need updates every so often. So. when you reach the next port (or you can try to do it at sea) turn off the unit. And recalibrate. You might even see if a navigation officer might want to help. (That way you can actually meet the Navigator or Staff Captain.)
xlxo Posted January 16, 2017 #4 Share Posted January 16, 2017 (edited) Here's where marinetraffic.com shows your location near Miami... http://www.marinetraffic.com/en/ais/home/shipid:368873/zoom:11 if I was on the boat.... I use Maps.Me to see where I am. Edited January 16, 2017 by xlxo

njrover0216 Posted January 17, 2017 Author #6 Share Posted January 17, 2017 Ya it has had us in Miami for awhile. We were in Dominican Republic today. It is not my GPS that is down...it is the ships GPS. They said it has been down since last cruise :(
I Am The Average American Posted January 17, 2017 #7 Share Posted January 17, 2017 How do they know where you are? Are you drifting? No way they can run the engines now. Won't other boats hit you now because you don't know where you are?

Cruise-Crazy Posted January 17, 2017 #10 Share Posted January 17, 2017 How do they know where you are? Are you drifting? No way they can run the engines now. Won't other boats hit you now because you don't know where you are? I'm sure they have nav GPS even if what's on the TV display isn't working. Homosassa Posted January 17, 2017 #11 Share Posted January 17, 2017 Ships have been sailing the oceans for hundreds of years and finding their ports before the advent of GPS tracking. You can be sure that the ship's navigation officer and other crew know how to find their way on the ocean without GPS.
