umuva Posted May 23, 2017 #26 Share Posted May 23, 2017 Water taxi stops right at hotel. Plenty of room for baggage. Stops at the cruise terminal. caribill Posted May 23, 2017 #28 Share Posted May 23, 2017 Some Venice definitions: Vaporetto - a water bus -- like a land bus, can have many people on it. They discourage taking luggage on it, especially during busy times Water taxi - much more costly than a vaporetto, but it is for your party, not the general public Piazzale Roma - a main public square not far from the cruise terminal. This is as close to Venice as land transportation (public bus, taxi) can get. A land taxi can also go to to the port terminal. To get to hotels in this area that are not next to the public square, you will have to walk over pedestrian bridges which have steps up and down on them. People mover - An elevated train between Piazzale Roma and the cruise terminal (and other stops). An elevator at each stop allows you to easily take luggage up/down to/from the train level. Cruise terminal - located about a block from the People Mover stop. After checking in, you then walk (with only carry-on items) to the ship. Note that if there is a Vaporetto ticket in your cabin, it is for a special route from near the cruise ship to near St. Mark's Square and back. It cannot be used on the normal public Vaporettos. The route taken does not go down the Grand Canal. If this is your first time in Venice, you should want at least one time to take the public Vaporetto that does take the Grand Canal route between Piazzale Roma and St. Mark's Square. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk You walk out the front door of hotel and you are on the dock for the water buses. The bellman will guide you to which taxi to take; all the water busses have plenty of room for luggage. On cruise day there will be quite a few people headed to the marine terminal so you will be on same vapperetto with others headed to their ships. Depending on what day you depart you will have anywhere from a few to six ships in port. The day we left last year we had NCL, Princess, Royal, Regent, MSC in port

flamomo Posted May 23, 2017 #31 Share Posted May 23, 2017 Another vote here for the Best Western Olimpia. Charming, great service, rooms have very modern bathrooms, offers a very tasty breakfast buffet, and as mentioned, only 2 relatively small bridges away from the Piazzale Roma. If you're looking to buy vino to take onboard, there's a co-op grocery store a few blocks from the hotel. Oh yeah .... another important detail ... the hotel does have an elevator!!
