Shop stalls at Port Vila?

Recommended Posts

yes - the stalls are now on the dock proper probably to get them out of the way on Wharf Road while there is much construction going on. However the relevant tranquility of the stall maze/zigzag in no way prepares you for the madness of the taxi/tour operators at the gate waiting to prey upon those unsuspecting passengers as it has always been in Port Vila

I think the reason is the works you can see happening there is another berth.

When we were there in 2013 an aussie ex-pat told us that because Port Vila had only one large wharf it meant that cruise ships had priority of use as they brought in the money. Vanuatu is a very poor place which relies heavily on tourist income. All other ships ie cargo had to sit out in the harbour to await some space at the wharf thus the price of goods is high as the shipping companies charge for the time their ships sit idling in harbour.

The construction you see on the ship bridge cam is the new wharf. In 2013 the stalls were all lined up along Wharf Rd with all the mayhem of the taxis & tour operators. When we went back in 2015 the stalls were still on the side of the road however there was marginally better traffic control.

On our most recent visit in December 2016 the stalls were inside the port fence

Funny how the wheel turns full circle.

When I first visited Vila (in 2008) the stalls were inside the fence. Then they moved them out to the road, became having them inside was deemed to be a security risk. Now, with the construction works in progress, they're back inside again.
