We left Austin at 1:30 arrived in Galveston at 7:00. 290 was closed at Mason rd so we circled back and took the Grand Parkway to hwy 59/69. We took hwy 6 from 59 to 45 just north of Galveston. Lots of traffic lights and a over pass closure. It was 2.5 hours from 290 and the Grand Parkway aka Hwy 99 to Galveston. Heavy fog in Galveston. To those of you with cruises next weekend...FEB 17 to 18....it's Mardi Gras in Galveston! In fact I think it continues the next weekend FEB 24 to 25. pcur Posted February 12, 2017 #4 Share Posted February 12, 2017 People arriving and driving to Galveston from Houston need to pay attention to this traffic delay. It's going to be this way for a long time, according to our shuttle driver. I recommend NOT using a metered service, because the delays on Hwy 45 are pretty bad just before coming into Galveston. We came in last night on 2/11/17 and were on the freeway around 8-9:00pm. We were sitting in traffic for at least 30 minutes on the way, and this was at night on a Saturday. If you are staying overnight, then go to Galveston and stay. Get the traffic out of the way without having to worry about getting to the ship. Also, the ship will most likely be delayed getting into port during February due to fog. It wasn't bad this morning. We called Jeff's Taxi and had him drop us off at the pier. We walked our luggage into the luggage drop-off, and then walked across the street and are sitting in Fuddrucker's waiting for the ship to start boarding. Relaxed, great lunch, and no worries. I feel for the people stuck on the freeway right now. It's not the construction, it's the fact they have narrowed to one lane, so even on weekends it's bad.
