each device needs to be registered and paid for. Then you can phone eachother onboard the ship. text eachother on the ship. Call ship to shore for $0.79 per minute (vs $2.99 pp for most US carriers).

If you all use iPhones, you don't need to buy the device package....iMessage works just by putting your iPhone in airplane mode and then connecting to the ships wifi (the free wifi that allows you to use the NCL app).

 

My kids were even able to iMessage friends at home.

This should not be a blanket statement. Be advised that many report that this works sometimes on some ships.
