St Kitts excursion includes stop at a Marriot hotel. No interest in visiting a hotel.

Do not book through Celebrity. When you get off the ship, there are a bunch of tour operators that can take you around. We got off ship, found a guy offering to take us around the island ($25 person). There were 6 of us on the open air truck. Went everywhere. If I were to go back one day, I would definitely find someone to take us to the volcano.

If the hotel stop is at the Marriott Resort, it's has a good beach with nice loungers & shade ... pool ... restaurant ... ocean-side beach beach/pool bar. If you want to go back to the cruise ship from there on your own, it's a short taxi ride ($4pp the last time we were there), and the hotel staff will get a cab for you.

Wondering if we want to skip hanging around the hotel does the excursion transportation offer to take us back to the ship or will we have to get out an find a taxi on our own?

Why take an excursion that has elements of no interest to you? Pick a different excursion. Or better yet, check the Ports of Call thread and/ or TripAdvisor for reputable private tour companies. Or just hire a driver at the port. We've had several wonderful days on St. Kitts, and none of those involved a ship excursion.

That is what we did. Our Driver was the nicest guy. He picked up his wife midway through the drive. Stopped at some rain forests and she was mixing us drinks in the back of the truck and gave us some great snacks she made at home. He did not work for some company. You will find most of the operators in the port working for some company (they will be wearing a green shirt). Be aware of the guys with the monkeys though.

Considering the excursion because we'll be traveling with someone with mobility issues an wheelchair accessible transportation on the island is rather hard to come by without doing a tour through the cruise lines.
