DIY Pompeii /Sorrento

Hi,

This appears to be doable on the basis if the following but any advice? Thanks

Take a cab to Napoli Centrale train station. Should cost you around 10-12 euros. Be sure to agree on a price with the driver before getting into the cab.

At the train station, you'll catch a Circumvesuviana train - just look for the signs overhead that lead to the platforms. You'll want a train heading toward Sorrento. Trains leave every 20-30 minutes. Be sure to get off at the Pompeii Scavi stop (not the Pompeii stop, which is the modern town). The trip will take around 45 minutes and cost only a few euros.

Take train to Sorrento for a wander around and then back for ship leaving.

Several.

First, you don't want to go to Napoli Centrale, you want Porta Nolana. The cab fare is set at €11 but to get this fare (la tariffa predeterminata) you must tell the driver before the trip begins/before he engages the meter. Don't be surprised if drivers "refuse" the fare, those at the cruise port are typically looking for all day fares. You might have better luck walking over to the adjacent Molo Beverello to find a driver willing to take the short ride.

Next, if you get on the Sorrento line there's only one stop in Pompei, called Pompei Scavi/Villa Misteri. (Where did you get this information anyway?). You can see the current scedule here: http://www.eavsrl.it/web/sites/default/files/eavferro/Napoli%20-%20Sorrento_1.pdf

Finally, after two rides on the Circumvesuviana a more than one hour return to Naples on this train most likely will not be appealing. Instead, you might consider the much faster (45 minutes) and convenient (arrival pier is adjacent to the cruise port) ferry from Sorrento to Molo Beverello, Naples. There is a return at 4:25 that gets you back at about 5:15.

Sorry one more question- our ship leaves at 6 so a bit nervous re delays if not back until 5.15 and earlier one leaves at 2. Would we be better doing it the other way around and then if worst case scenario with train could get a taxi from Pompeii back?

There is some wisdom to this idea (go to your furthest point early in the day). Another consideration is that if you want to do some shopping in Sorrento, many of the decent shops/boutiques close around 1pm (they reopen around 4). The more touristy places will often remain open throughout the afternoon. If you go to Sorrento first...you could also consider taking a fast jetboat/hydrofoil from Molo Beverello (the ferry port next to the cruise port) although you would want to take a look at the online schedules (close to your trip date) to see if a boat works with your schedule.

The downside to going to Pompeii in the afternoon is that this is the hottest part of the day. Pompeii is a very open area and can be uncomfortable if its a hot day. So this is a situation where we love the flexibility of doing things on our own. No need to make your decision (where to go first) until you are actually walking off the ship.
