We tend to go to bed early and were asleep most night by 10 - 10:30 pm. So we have no insight to the ships night life. LOL

In case you were wondering what the bed set up at night looked like this is it:

Here you are see you CAN get out to the balcony but watch your head! It was doable you just had to sit on the bed and slide over under the pullman. During the day he put the bed back up in the ceiling (he asked what we preferred).

This is the fold out sofa I actually slept here and let my husband and oldest (she is 5'10") have the bed. I was shocked how comfortable it was!! My husband said he would switch with me one night and I was like NO!! LOL

so bed by the balcony would have been better?

sofa bed and drop down bed would have been near the closet.

easier access to the balcony if kids are lounging around in their beds?

I don't believe the bed by the balcony is even an option?? I only saw photos of the Balcony set up like this.

If it was reversed then the pullman and sofa bed would block the hallway to get to the bathroom.

Thanks for all the great info. We are going on a cruise on the Gem later this month and you answered a lot of our questions about the ship with your postings. We have been on all of the large newer ships, including the Bliss maiden voyage, and were afraid of the smaller one, especially since all the suites and Haven were already booked and we wanted to take kids along and were afraid of not having enough room in a mini suite. From your posting, it looks like we will be ok. I also am not in love with the concept of not being able to go to the thermal suite co-ed with my wife. But, probably we will "put up with it anyway" and go when we send the kids to the kids activity rooms ...
