mlbcruiser Posted April 30, 2017 #1 Share Posted April 30, 2017 With regard to the ports where river cruise ships dock, are there generally taxis waiting or taxi stands quite close to the docking areas? In particular, what about in Amsterdam (where we will disembark)? Thanks for any information.
Hydrokitty Posted April 30, 2017 #2 Share Posted April 30, 2017 Not usually. Most of the time you will dock within walking distance of the main part of town or a local shuttle or ship shuttle will be provided. As for Amsterdam we've docked there several times and I don't recall ever seeing taxis like you see getting off the cruise ships....it depends on where the ship is assigned and you won't know where that is until you get there, you might be close to public transportation or not.....but you can ask your TM or front desk personnel and they will arrange to get a taxi for you. The day before you tell the desk what time you need the taxi. The day of disembarkation, you sit in lounge, and your taxi arrives as requested. You can also ask the desk to order you a taxi at the other stops also. Most folks use the included tours.
TravelerThom Posted April 30, 2017 #4 Share Posted April 30, 2017 As already stated reception can call you a taxi. If you go off on your own mid-cruise be aware that sometimes the boat will move. It is fairly common that your position in the same docking area has rearranged (eg you may have moved from next to the quai to an outside position if your boat is next to depart). Other times the boat may have a scheduled move some kilometers away. Most lines request you trade your room key for an off-boat card as you depart, and this should have a phone number of the boat. Don't panic, they don't want to lose you. Just don't assume the boat will be in exactly the same position. ASK at the desk before you set off on your own.
