Easy and Cheap Beach Snorkel in Cozumel?

This summer, the wife and I are doing a Western Caribbean cruise on the Breeze. We have been to this port before, but wanted to seek the advice of others who have been there. We wanted to do a beach with decent snorkeling. We have our own equipment. The kicker is we are a bit paranoid about booking transportation outside of the cruise line.

Are there any inexpensive beaches that can be used to snorkel that are walking distance from the port, or is there reliable transportation?

Thanks in advance!

Cabs are safe and well regulated on Coz (especially compared to the crooks in Philly!); the fares will be posted in dollars on a board near the cab line. fare should be about $10-11 each way to go to the Money Bar beach club with good snorkeling from the shore, good facilities, lockers, lounge chairs & tables plus good food, drinks and service. Same cab fare will get you back to the ship - the fare covers up to 4 passengers in the cab, so pair up with others from your roll call and save $$ Enjoy!

JohninDc, thanks for the info. My paranoia is about getting back to the port. Do you arrange with the cabs to pick you up, or is it like many cities will there be cabs at the beach waiting for passengers to take back to the port?

If you know when you will be ready to return you might be able to arrange a pick up from the same driver who drops you there. Usually several cabs waiting in line; if none one of the staff there will call - should not take more than a minute or two. The cab drivers know that everyone wants to head back to the ship in the afternoon.

Coz time is often different from ship time -- make sure to use a watch set to ship time. There are 3 cruise ship piers on Coz - be sure that you know which one to go back to (it can get confusing after that 12th margarita ). Enjoy! :)

PS - Welcome to the boards!

We used Cozumel H20 for snorkeling, and it was phenomenal. It costs $65 per person; the tour stops at four reefs and lasts about 3 hours, and the tour guides are friendly and professional! As a part of the booking process they will ask if you have your own equipment or if you will need some. They work frequently with customers who are there with cruise lines, so they are very conscious about the time and there were no issues with arriving or getting back to the boat.

Cabs are readily available at all of the popular beaches to get you back to the ship, and if there are not any there the club will call one for you. Getting back is not an issue unless you try to cut it really close.

Our original plans fell through, so at the last minute, we (15 of us) decided to get a couple of vans and head to Money Bar. We had 6 kids and 9 adults. We had an absolute BLAST. The kids did an actual snorkel tour to the reef with a guide. Most of us adults just snorkeled ourselves, at and drank all afternoon. The best part of the day was spending over an hour with the kids jumping off the pier. They absolutely loved this location and we had a perfect day.

We got two vans each way. $25 per van each way. When we were ready to head back to the ship, the guy at the bar made a call and our taxi/vans were there within minutes.

I will give another vote for Money Bar. We've been there 3 times and never had an issue with getting a cab back. It's not a true beach that most people think of, but they have plenty of lounge chairs, shade if you want it, good food and drinks, great snorkeling and usually not too crowded.

Is there a locker you can rent to lock your valuables up while you snorkel? There's only two of us and we want to be able to lock our things up while we are in the water!

Yes. Lockers can be rented for a few dollars and are included if you book the package with equipment and lunch. The locker key we had was attached to a holder you could put around your wrist.
