Cancellation Charge?

My husband and I were supposed to leave yesterday (July 1) on a cruise out of Galveston. My father had a brain tumor removed and is in intensive care with pneumonia, so we decided not to go. We did not buy trip insurance because we only bought the cruise a couple of months ago, but lesson learned on that. We will always buy it in the future. Anyway, I called Carnival and I asked what to do. I was told we could only change one person's name on the reservation and that it would cost $150. So I changed my name to a friend's name so that she could go. I asked about my husband and explained that he would not be able to go. I was told that he should just not show up. Today I get an email from Carnival saying that we are being assessed a penalty of $150. I have read through the contract, but it says nothing about a penalty for not showing up. The email also said that they would be refunding the taxes, fees, and port expenses. I do not know if my friend told them he was not showing up, but it still should not matter. I tried to call Carnival, but they are closed today. Has anyone had experience with this?

There is no penalty for a no show.

Carnival customer service is 24hrs. If your friend didn't show then a penalty was assessed.

OP, best wishes for your fathers speedy recovery.

What would be the charge of $150 for if the friend did not show? Wouldn't all monies be lost except for taxes/fees if nobody showed for that booking?

I didn't see where the friend did not show though.

Was the original booking booked with an offer that was specific to your or your husband's VIFP number i.e. past guest, casino offer. If your friend does not qualify for that offer on her own and the other person no shows it nullifies the offer and additional charges may be incurred.

It seems to me that the email is not an invoice, it's just a confirmation in writing of the same $150 penalty assessed and was paid the day before to change the 1 name.

Had you already paid the $150? Did you check your cc to see if two $150 charges were made. I would think this would be the reason, they are just phrasing it as a 'penalty' instead of a 'fee'. Agree that no additional penalties should be assessed unless, as someone else posted, it was a discount offer from the casino due to your husbands status or something like that.
