trrn2016 Posted July 12, 2017 #1 Share Posted July 12, 2017 Hi, Are the ports in Hawaii similar to the ones in the Caribbean where you can walk around, shop, eat, etc? Especially interested in learning about Maui and Kauai but would love to get information about all. We will be on the Pride of America in February, 2018. Thanks so much!! CruiserBruce Posted July 12, 2017 #2 Share Posted July 12, 2017 There is not much in the immediate area of the port on either Kauai or Maui. Some reading on the board would reveal the shuttle possibilities at Maui, to a nearby shopping center or two. Haven't heard anything like that at Kauai. We have not seen a shuttle to Queen Ka'ahumanu Center in Kahului in quite a while, and don't know if it is still running or not. As far as we know (and please update us if we are wrong), there are no other shuttles anywhere. Your best bet, as mentioned along the line here, is to rent a car to see the island. If you want to see Hawaii's great scenic beauty, you're going to have to get away from those mostly industrial port areas. It's going to take a rental car, or a tour at minimum. The driving is very easy in Maui and Kauai and you'll save a ton of money over tours. That said, in Kauai, there is a nice area with shopping about a 15 min walk away. Or, there is a shuttle inside the port which runs all day. The shopping fronts Kalapacki Bay and Beach. Just walk through to get to the beach. We like to sit at the outdoor beach bar at the Dukes Restaurant at the Marriott there. Good for the short half day of the last day there, or an evening walk there for dinner or drinks the first day after seeing the island.
