Janet, I have just read your review in one page-turning sitting and have to say thanks for such a well-written and informative review of your cruise. The excellent photos are much appreciated!

It was nice to see Michelle and her floatplane again- we flew with her in August 2011 on our first cruise.

Great job!

Hi, Norris!

Writing what turned out to be a very lengthy trip review (for the first time) about our cruise of a lifetime is a little nerve-wracking, wondering if anyone would be interested in reading it! ( I reasoned, if nothing else, it would be something I could re-read down the road, to help me remember why our Alaska cruise was so spectacular!)

I learned about Island Wings on these boards, and it was very comforting flying with a pilot as experienced as Michelle.

Thank you for your kind words!

Janet

Janet,

Thank you so much for your review!! We cruise to Alaska on the Island Princess in May, 2018 with the same itinerary except we leave out of Vancouver. It was helpful to read what your excursions were and what you enjoyed on the ship. This is our first cruise and we are both excited to go to Alaska. I'm already gathering clothes to go since finding long sleeved things aren't easy in Central Texas. Thanks again!!

I'm so glad you found this helpful! I got so much great advice on these boards in planning our cruise. First cruise and first time to Alaska - what a wonderful adventure you have ahead of you!

Awesome review! My wife and I will be on the Ruby next Saturday and these pictures have us very excited! We are scheduled to do the Dog Sled Adventure in Juneau. We originally scheduled the same tour (with the 2 landings) as you through an outside company, but received an email about a month ago that said our tour was cancelled. So we booked the Dog Sled Adventures by Helicopter through the cruise line and are hoping to do this because your pictures look AMAZING. I hope our tour goes as scheduled :D

How was the weather on the glacier for the dog sled tour? This is probably the most perplexing part of packing. Any advice on how to dress for the excursion?

Thanks in advance!

We took the dog sled tour on the glacier in July. The temperature on the glacier was warmer than we thought. We wore rain jackets and had sweatshirt underneath; hat and gloves. Did not need hat or gloves

for those who want to post directly to cruise critic; I have found the easiest way for me to post is as follows.

1. download all my pictures to my computer or laptop

2. I have auto upload programmed for Shutterfly website (the website will never delete your photos)

3. sign into shutterfly and go to my photo album.

4. pick out the pictures I want to put on cruise critic and right click the photo and paste it here.

5. this pic took less than a minute to do

Thank you for this helpful tutorial! I have been using Tapatalk from my iPad, but the biggest problem has been trying to make sure pictures all of the pictures (from 2 cameras and 2 iPhones) are stored in the same place, so it's been somewhat of a 3-ring circus.

I have used Shutterfly for some photos in the past. May I ask, how you get your computer to automatically upload to Shutterfly? I have some pictures on Google Pics as well, and probably have some in iCloud, but it's all very confusing to me. :o Also, as a technically-challenged Apple/Mac person, when you say "right-click", does that mean copy and paste?

Thank you!

what a great review. We did Emerald out of Seattle in July. The seas were calm entire cruise; never knew ship was moving; plus the weather in Seattle was perfect.

Thank you! So glad to hear you had the same wonderful weather we did. ( Even in calm seas, I always knew the ship was moving, however, but my husband would agree with you!)

Yes right click means copy and paste. I hope I did not confuse you. I have a mac and ipad; but I also use a pc with Windows 10. When I come back from a trip I put my camera media card into my pc. It uploads all my pics to Microsoft photos; from there they automatically are uploaded to Microsoft one drive(microsofts free cloud storage); I have an app on my pc called shutterfly express (which basically is a quick way to upload photos to my shutterfly account. So from media card to shutterfly app I upload all my pics into a new album; in this case I made a Alaska Cruise album which has about 600 pics. When I post pics on cruisecritic I open my album on shutterfly and copy and paste into cruise critic. I believe the same process is available on a mac. Use iphotos or use the shutterfly express app for mac.

Thanks for the quick reply and for describing your procedure in more detail. I'll research Shutterfly options for my MacBook Pro, iPhone, and iPad. An automatic upload to unlimited storage sounds great, as I found that the pictures use up storage on the iCloud and Google Drive (which aren't free) very quickly!

Oh my gosh, I love the beautiful picture you posted! The Ikebana boat was my favorite exhibit in the Chihuly museum.

Fiesta deck (6). You'll most likely board on deck 7. Just go down the nearest stairs and look around for the 2 shops on either side of the Atrium. Guest Services is between them and in front of the casino.

Boarding usually starts around 11 or 11:30. If you arrive at the port around 10:30ish, you'll be in one of the first groups after all the priority passengers.

Be sure to leave lots of room in your suitcases. The robes alone weight 2+ pounds each.

JF Retired RRT thank you so much for this valuable information ! :)We are going to try to get to the embarkation point at about 10:00 A.M. and hope for a chance at boarding before 2:30 PM. As soon as we get on board, we are going to go as fast as we can directly to Guest Services on Deck 6, in front of the Casino.

AMS, Thank you again for a great write-up and for replying to everyone's messages.:) - EBC

Shutterfly is one cloud photo service that won't delete any pictures; even if you don't buy anything from them. We usually make photo books from our travels so we may buy something twice a year; but use their storage for everything

I have a few albums uploaded to Shutterfly, and occasionally make a photo book or framed print as gifts. I didn't realize their storage is unlimited, and that you can upload automatically.

I started the automatic upload from my iPad, and it looks like it will be going for a few hours as it uploads around 3000 pictures! :o

Since I don't have a "right click" on my MacBook track pad (at least I don't think I do!), I tried to copy and paste, but was unsuccessful. (When I select it in my album, I can't find a copy/paste option.) I was able to select a picture, then go to share - create a new share site - and then drag that version of the picture onto a Cruise Critic posting. (I copied photos of my Seattle Port Valet information sheet onto that thread). So it took several steps, but I was able to copy the photos.

Sorry I'm so slow with this, but I couldn't find a quicker way. Thanks for your help getting me this far!

I think you can set up your track pad on macbook so right side will copy and left side opens things. On ipad you just press down until you see the copy logo pop up.\

Below is how you change your trackpad on macbook

Open System Preferences either by clicking on the cog icon if it is in your Dock, or by clicking on the Apple icon at the top left of your screen and then System Preferences. Then click on Trackpad and in the Trackpad preferences select: 'Click or tap with two fingers'.May 1, 2015

It worked!!! Thank you so much, AF-1! (It's embarrassing how little I know about how to use my computer...swipes, one-finger, two-finger taps have been complete mystery to me.) Work is calling, so I'll try to post a picture later about one of our dining "finds" in Juneau.

Since AF-1 was gracious enough to give me a tutorial on posting pictures from Shutterfly, I'm going to give it a go with a few pictures of one of our favorite meals off of the ship. Now in full disclosure mode, we only had a couple of meals off of the Ruby, but this place was one we'd highly recommend. Deckhand Dave's in Juneau was recommended to us by our young Coastal Helicopters shuttle driver. Apparently Dave used to be a deckhand on a fishing boat. It is kind of like a food truck, where you place your order and then they bring it to you at outdoor tables under a sheltered awning. The halibut tacos and fish and chips were absolutely incredible - the fish tasted like it had just been caught.

The batter on the halibut looks heavy, but it was very light, and covered a huge piece of fish. The fries were also delicious.

It is a short walk from the dock before you get to the downtown, and seemed to be filled with locals, which is always a good sign.
