3redheads Posted August 20, 2017 #1 Share Posted August 20, 2017 I know the cost of airfare varies based on time of year and where you are flying from, but I told a friend who is from Houston that I am waiting for airfare to drop for our May cruise out of Galveston and he said he didn't think it would go lower  We are flying out of Washington DC in May. Direct flight is currently $447 One stop over $384 He lives in DC now and said he paid less for a flight to England recently than a flight back to Houston. Is airfare notoriously expensive to Houston? I have airfare alerts set up through quite a few sites and apps. TIA
bagladee Posted August 20, 2017 #2 Share Posted August 20, 2017 We flew Southwest into Houston Hobby. It's a smaller airport with only a few lines flying in. But Southwest was very affordable. Not sure if they fly out of DC Sent from my SM-G930V using Forums mobile app

3redheads Posted August 20, 2017 Author #4 Share Posted August 20, 2017 I checked those and it appears I might be a little early trying to book. Southwest is only booking out until March and Jetblue is booking out until April. Thanks so much! I will keep checking!
lbjen Posted August 21, 2017 #5 Share Posted August 21, 2017 Definitely keep checking Southwest, plus Hobby is much more convenient than Bush. You have several airports to choose from for your departure, hopefully one of them will have a good fare!
LuckyStar Posted August 21, 2017 #6 Share Posted August 21, 2017 I fly United a lot from Denver to Houston and it's very cheap for me. Usually under $200 round trip.Anyway, I consider this cheap.

According to the Southwest website they will open booking through June 1, 2018 on August 28th. Check a day or so before because sometimes they will push the date up. I wasn't able to find anything on JetBlue's site.

3redheads Posted August 22, 2017 Author #9 Share Posted August 22, 2017 Great tips and airfare rates! Also, thank you for the info about Hobby being the best bet for the airport to fly into. I will keep checking-obsessively. Hope I can snag some of those good rates. Thanks!
BleednBlu Posted August 22, 2017 #10 Share Posted August 22, 2017 If you book with Southwest keep checking prices. They will give you credit if you rebook on their site which was very easy. Sent from my iPhone using Forums

nursepixie Posted August 23, 2017 #12 Share Posted August 23, 2017 I'm booked from Denver in November. I ended up booking through two different lines to make it cheaper. So I'm flying into hobby on Southwest and out of IAH on united. It's $480 for two if us round trip. Sent from my iPhone using Forums

TruckerDave Posted August 23, 2017 #14 Share Posted August 23, 2017 I lived in Houston for almost 20 years and yes, Houston was one of the more expensive cities to fly into or out of.

sredish Posted September 1, 2017 #21 Share Posted September 1, 2017 We always fly into Hobby on SWA for cruises, as it's much closer to the port than IAH and cheaper for us, but it's still much more expensive than flying most places we fly. Not sure why Houston is an expensive destination, but for instance if you watch fares, you can fly into Dallas Love from PHX for around $200 round trip (sometimes as low as $49 each way!), and we can't ever touch Houston for under $280 - $300. sredish Posted September 1, 2017 #22 Share Posted September 1, 2017 I had no idea. Thanks so much for the tip! Yes! And if you originally used miles to book your flight and the number of miles goes down after you book, you are refunded the extra miles immediately. Garth2 Posted September 7, 2017 #23 Share Posted September 7, 2017 I started following UAL's prices 11 months out when they are first offered. They started out high but eventually started coming down. We were at $420 to start & caught a break 90-100 days out when it dipped to $300 so we locked in. I think prices are high now due to the uncertainty from Harvey & Irma.
