We'll be heading out of Sydney on the Golden Princess for a New Zealand cruise in October. Do we need to get Australian currency for the slots in the casino?

No, you insert your Cruise Card, and charge the amount-IIRC, it's a minimum of AUD$10 to it. I sailed the Golden Princess November 2016. When you cash out, you go to the cashier and they pay you in cash. I managed to double my money, which was MOST unexpected!

Someone with more recent experience in Australia may be able to help. I have never travelled internationally so I don't absolutely know, but the currency is AUD aboard, but you would need New Zealand currency if going ashore.

HTH and enjoy your cruise.

Expect to have the gambling tables almost to yourself. The staff just have to stand around and try to avoid looking bored. A few poker machines will be used, but only a few. Regarding currency - AUD is the on-board currency of ships operating out of Australia. I do know that a few years ago, the passenger's cruise card was used for the slot machines, but I cannot guarantee if that is still the case or whether cash is required.

As has been stated, insert your cruise card, set up your account and play. Charges will be on your onboard account in AUS $. Rules state most OBC cannot be used in the casino but I have never had a problem doing so. Your on board account is a combination of funds from many places-FCC-military-loyalty etc so it would be hard to know (for them) which was which. Hope that makes sense. I do spend lots of time in the casino; have sailed recently in the OZ area and always use my OBC for gambling.
