Insurance Question

We leave next Sunday on the Magic. We didn't insure the trip but I was wondering if I could still purchase evacuation/medical coverage. I'm not worried about cancellation/interruption just if we get injured and need coverage when out of the country.

Is it possible at this stage?

Thanks all!

We use Geo Blue for health /evacuation coverage. It covers pre existing conditions.

They have both single trip and yearly plans:

https://www.geobluetravelinsurance.com/products/single-trip/voyager-5-overview.cfm

I have looked into it and will most likely use it for some of our trips where airfare is cheap and hotels can be cancelled with 24 hours notice (Cartegena, Colombia is a good example). Keep in mind that it limits to $500,000 in medical evacuation which is not enough for French Polynesia/Australia/NZ, Asia, and Antarctica. You need a million for those locations, and any reputable Antarctica cruise won't allow you board without proof of an appropriate insurance policy including $1M in evacuation.

Tripinsurancestore.com is a company I have used for many years now. They only sell a small amount of prescreened policies and they are available to answer all questions before you buy a policy. They have also went to bat for me with an insurance company and won! I can't recommend this company enough.

Check with your credit card company since many cards have travel insurance as a benefit.
And then compare the coverage the credit card offers, and it's rules, to those offered by private insurance available through http://www.insuremytrip.com and the rest.

The original question was about medical coverage and evacuation insurance.

That is not the type of coverage offered by credit cards!

Your own insurance may include emergency care outside of the USA but not evacuation.

I thought the same originally, but someone recently pointed out to me that Platinum AMEX offers such coverage.

(Scroll to Page 18.)

The Medical Treatment coverage looks very nice (especially since it is included already). With regard to Evacuation, item #2 says "Necessary costs for transporting or transferring You to the nearest adequately equipped hospital if free transport is not available." I'm not sure if that includes evacuation from a cruise ship. Taken literally it would.

Adequately equipped is a subjective term, and will probably not be in the USA.

The same words or similar intent can be found in private insurance policies.

Actually better policies will specifically talk about transfer to a stateside hospital by air ambulance if required. Some will even mention the closest suitable hospital to the patients home. Those are the types of policies I buy.

Gosh I wish I could afford such premium policies. Unfortunately, I'm stuck with the mass market options like Nationwide Insurance, CSA, Travelguard, etc.

Thanks for sharing.

The cost is about $15 more typically. If I couldn't afford the additional $15, I wouldn't travel.

From which insurer?

I'd have to check past policies. I typically buy from insuremytrip and call them, not just pick something from the web site. There are often upgrades you can add to policies for very little money, but you need to call to do it. I am not loyal to any one insurer, as I have different needs for different regions and types of trips.
