When is the best time of year to cruise to Alaska?

The towns have become very overdeveloped, and there will be as many as 10 huge cruise ships docked at the same time as yours. This is not the authentic Alaska.

This is why I mentioned that it's important to look at itineraries. On our particular one, we went to less frequented towns like Sitka, where we were the only ship in port. We tendered ashore and then literally walked from there to the Sitka National Forest where we had the place basically all to ourselves and where we explored without hordes of people, excursions, or vendors. Absolutely fantastic. In other ports, we researched in advance and avoided ship sponsored excursions or the crowds.

With that said, most cruise itineraries will undoubtedly include busier ports like Juneau and Ketchikan (Ketchikan in particular felt like Nassau on a crowded day when we got off the ship), but I wouldn't discourage anyone from going on a cruise to Alaska. For many, it's the only opportunity they'll ever have to visit this wonderful state.
