hopeless holiday booker Posted September 18, 2017 #1 Share Posted September 18, 2017 May have to fly home from LAX after our cruise finishes in San Diego. Had anybody done this and if so, how?
CruiserBruce Posted September 18, 2017 #2 Share Posted September 18, 2017 If you do a search, there are a couple threads on the topic. There are short hops (flights) from SAN to LAX. There have been discussions about train. But really, probably the easiest way is one way car rental, or the short flights.
hopeless holiday booker Posted September 18, 2017 Author #3 Share Posted September 18, 2017 Thank you for replying. I have had a look but they're all old posts. Tried looking at car rental but can't seem to find somewhere to get a rough idea of price. Taxi/car hire looks around $300. I'll have a look at the flights - hadn't thought of that - weird I know. If someone has other options I'd be interested.
CruiserBruce Posted September 18, 2017 #4 Share Posted September 18, 2017 The place to get rental car prices is on their websites, or the occasional large retailer, like that big box membership store. I don't think this is done that often, and now is not yet cruise season for San Diego, so you are left with older posts.
SadieN Posted September 19, 2017 #5 Share Posted September 19, 2017 Just looked at kayak dot com for April 14 09:00 out of San Diego airport and returning April 14 21:00 to LAX. Found rentals ranging from $75 - $130. I chose a random date. Did the reverse years ago for $86. Prices haven't changed that much.
hopeless holiday booker Posted September 19, 2017 Author #6 Share Posted September 19, 2017 Thank you. that's cheaper than a cab! I tried that website trying to put in the cruise port rather than the airport and it didn't work for me but I'll try again or go from san diego airport. I'll have a check how you get from the port to the airport.
SadieN Posted September 19, 2017 #7 Share Posted September 19, 2017 There might be rental shuttles. Cab would cost about $10. Could probably walk it if you're ambitious. Sent from my iPhone using Forums
KeepCalmBearOn Posted September 19, 2017 #8 Share Posted September 19, 2017 The Cruise Port is barely 2 miles from the airport and there is an Avis that is walkable from the Cruise Port, maybe an Enterprise too. There is now a consolidated rental car facility for the airport off site. If you are from outside the U.S. you should be able to use rentalcars.com and get a car with all the insurance you need, plus no drop off fee. There is also a train from SD to LA, but it is a very slow option. It would take 4 hours vs 2 hours (depending on traffic) driving.

From Los Angeles Union Station you can take the Flyaway bus to LAX. http://www.lawa.org/flyaway/content.aspx?id=10152 A few days ago, on a Sunday early afternoon, it would have taken us three hours to drive from the cruise port to LAX. pliskin Posted September 20, 2017 #10 Share Posted September 20, 2017 If you're exploring the train, look at Amtrak. But those can get delayed occasionally. The flights are like $110 one way on United, Delta and American. Sent from my SM-G955U using Forums mobile app
Splinter Posted September 21, 2017 #11 Share Posted September 21, 2017 You might also want to check out the new Tesla ride-share service from San Diego to LAX. They don't pick up at the pier, but do have several downtown San Diego pick up locations. Here is their website: https://tesloop.com/
jamesr3939 Posted September 28, 2017 #12 Share Posted September 28, 2017 I would never drive it. The traffic is just to unpredictable. I think I would catch a Southwest from SAN to LAX. Only downside is SAN airport sucks! I have been there on days the cruise ship docks and it's a zoo. It still beats driving. Downside is if you do SWA you probably won't be able to check your luggage all the way through, which will create an issue at LAX. Maybe see who code shares with your outbound airlines from LAX and book a SAN - LAX with them. That way they should be able to transfer your luggage.
