Is it best to purchase the ships VOOM along with a data pkg with my carrier AT&T? Will just purchasing a data plan through AT&T work just fine alone?

The data plan from your cell carrier will be much slower and likely more expensive than VOOM. If your phone is set up for WiFi calling, all you need is VOOM.

AFAIK your data package from your carrier is not honored on board.

 

You either pay for the wifi package, or pay their data rates.

 

Also, ATT international roaming data packages have very little data.
