Driving from FLL to Miami Marriott Biscayne Bay. Tolls?

We are flying in Friday, January 5th, the day before our cruise. We are considering renting a car. Will we have to rent a Sunpass or can we pay cash for tolls on the route? We may also just Uber, but would like to go somewhere Friday afternoon to have lunch, etc. before our friends arrive at 8pm. We are not sure if it's a walk-able part of Miami. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

Most rental cars in Florida are set up for Sunpass, and you are charged for the rental, and the usage. Very simple really, and not expensive.

 

A quick check of Google Maps shows the most direct route has tolls.

There are no tolls on I-95 south from FLL to Miami, if you DO NOT use the express lanes.

No tolls as long as you don't use the express lanes.

 

As for the need for the rental, I see none. You can easily walk to the metromover and head into Brickell and Downtown for lunch and dinner. Or a quick $12-$15 Uber ride to Miami Beach. The cost of gas, parking, and the rental, and the hassle of returning it makes no sense for such a short period of time in Miami.

 

The hotel is right on the edge of Downtown and a metromover station (free transit) is close by. Its a dense walkable area being so close to the Mover station.

We are staying at the Doubletree next door and there is an Enterprise in the mall that attaches the 2 hotels. We rented from FLL and will return at the Enterprise so we don't have to pay to park the car overnight.
