Adanac16 Posted October 24, 2017 #26 Share Posted October 24, 2017 I have been eagerly waiting for your review of this cruise. Have always wanted to visit the east coast in the fall, with all the vivid colours. So really excited to see your fabulous photography, Also looking forward to your thoughts of the Regal. Like you I have some reservations about sailing on a large ship - have you changed your mind about them? Am I the first to solve the song lyrics - Don't let me be misunderstood by The Animals. Some of the Royal class itineraries interest me, but I am reluctant to give up the wrap around promenade deck! We will have our first jaunt on the Ruby in January. SOLIVITA LADY Posted October 24, 2017 #30 Share Posted October 24, 2017 " I must go down to the sea again, to the lonely sea and the sky and all I ask is a tall ship and a star to steer her by".... I don't recall who spoke those words-it might have been the poet John Masefield or the guy behind me in Walgreens yesterday , but I remember saying them to Carol as the security officers on the Celebrity Reflection tasered me to loosen my grip on the gangway back on January 21st 2017 when I was unceremoniously booted-off at the end of my cruise. Yes, you heard right. Nine long months since we last sailed the high seas. Oh! The humanity! We have just returned from the Regal Princess and if ye have a mind (preferred) ye can join me in a tale that even shivers my own timbers. I have been home in Chicago for one hour and have eaten a full bowl of Wheeties and aided by a supply of Guinness the like of which the World has never seen, am casting off on a journey down recent memory lane before I forget it all. I hope you will join me for the next few weeks as I tell my tale in photos and video.... Norris I’m subscribed as I’m doing this cruise next Year with my daughter-in-law on October 6th. Rare Bimmer09 Posted October 24, 2017 Author #33 Share Posted October 24, 2017 We left Snowy behind.... and were in a taxi at 9 am for a 12.33 flight. Kerbside check-in. TSA Pre so I didn't have to show my computer, open my camera bag or remove my trousers. United Club to relax and have breakfast. The chorizo and egg scramble hit the spot as did the 4 Illy espressos. Flight on time to La Guardia Checking into Facebook Big wheels keep on turning... United's safety videos are witty and inventive and who can look away? Our turn next... Rare Bimmer09 Posted October 24, 2017 Author #34 Share Posted October 24, 2017 With a tail wind our 1 hour 53 minute flight landed half an hour early and we weren't complaining. Luggage in hand we joined the taxi line The airport is undergoing a huge renovation and "not before time" says this tired building I used the iPhone 5 for the airport and plane pictures. A smooth taxi ride into Midtown on a sunny 74 degree day led us to the Omni hotel. I use my new camera as much as possible from here on in. Rare Bimmer09 Posted October 24, 2017 Author #40 Share Posted October 24, 2017 A lovely fall day in New York city and as we are only 6 blocks from Central Park our plan is to visit the Bethesda Fountain there. I will go on foot with 13 lbs of cameras on my shoulder while Miss Public Transportation will ride a bus up to 72nd street and meet me at the fountain. That means I have a 20 block walk ahead of me but it's a lovely day. East 52nd street, like many streets in New York was being dug up/renovated The streets were full of tourists like me but I walk fast and was soon at the Southeast corner of the park. Calmer and quieter near the water
Rare Bimmer09 Posted October 24, 2017 Author #41 Share Posted October 24, 2017 I trudge on through the park, past the buskers and souvenir stands, hotdog and pretzel carts, skateboarders, young families with kids, dog walkers, horse-drawn carriage riders, gymnasts-two guys had a large crowd of 100 or so watching them do tumbling (on concrete!!) and breakdancing. it was all going on when I reached the calm of the fountain where a young soprano was singing opera songs in the large underground tunnel. It was like being at a 10 ring Circus. There were 3 handsome young couples getting married and photographed here and lots of happy relaxed faces-just the best place to be. hockeyguru32 Posted October 24, 2017 #43 Share Posted October 24, 2017 The Gentleman's Seafaring Journal (or Gerbil according to my spell checker) I prefer as it is written in Chronological order which means that if you are expecting pictures of the ship today you are out of luck. They will follow in time and there are a lot of them. I took 6 cameras and my camera bag weighed 13 pounds. I write every day until the review is done. No lapses. No coming to a halt unfinished. I made a promise we will always remember-no retreat, baby, no surrender. I drop song lyrics in here and there and award magnificent prizes to those with the first correct answer which I somehow forget to mail to the lucky winners. Let's forgive and forget. WHAT"S UP AHEAD? I'm glad you asked! I have a massive amount of material- 6 cameras remember? And Princess Patters Excursions in every port FOOD PORN-I think every meal consumed is photographed (and eaten) SHIP PORN for the boat nerds and that includes me HECTOR SINGS! Yes the singing headwaiter appears in a video or two FOG PORN! We meet Needtocruisesoon AKA Ron from California LOBSTER PORN Photos from all the shows we went to-Princess raises the bar New York City in photos and video Some Fall foliage and I don't know what else.... Rare Bimmer09 Posted October 24, 2017 Author #49 Share Posted October 24, 2017 45 minutes after leaving the hotel I was wondering where Carol was so I texted her. She had taken a wrong entrance to the park after the bus and was walking away from the fountain and was now too far adrift to join me. I heard a Chinese man who comes there to play one of those one string instruments and each time I have heard him I stop what I am doing (usually nothing) and listen to him. Very moving sound. I always have to give him a tip. I have some video of my time in the park and captured him on it but I have yet to watch it and upload to Youtube. I'll get to that tomorrow no doubt. What's to come after the park? Well we enjoy a nap and then go to an early dinner with some old and dear NY friends at our favorite Indian restaurant. Then sleep. Then wake and pack up to go to Brooklyn Cruise Terminal and then we'll start the Regal portion of this GSJ. More park meantime.... The Boathouse restaurant-a great lunch spot with a view. Lots of boaters rowing on the lake today but for some reason I didn't photograph them. Time to head back up the steps and retrace my steps.... Although the sky looks menacing at this point it didn't rain. (I exaggerated the clouds for drama) The Essex House Hotel in the photo was our former New York hotel of choice but has changed hands so many times in the past 20 years and lost it's appeal although the location was fantastic with it's views of the park. Cabernetlover Posted October 24, 2017 #50 Share Posted October 24, 2017 I'm so glad you're doing a review of this particular cruise because I've recently made reservations for the Oct 13 to 20 7 day New England Canada Cruise in 2018, which I haven't really gotten excited about yet. Partially because it's still a year away, but mostly because I'm really, really excited about leaving this Sunday on the 15 day round trip San Francisco to Hawaii cruise on the Grand. When that cruise is over, and I'm feeling depressed, I'll have the New England Canada cruise to get excited about. Like you say, Always Be Planning.
