mscg2000 Posted January 20, 2018 #1 Share Posted January 20, 2018 I requested a new passport and I’m wondering if the government shutdown will affect passport processing. Anyone know?
thinfool Posted January 20, 2018 #2 Share Posted January 20, 2018 Suggest you look into this with Google. Short answer is 'maybe', 'maybe not'.
CRUISEFAN0001 Posted January 20, 2018 #3 Share Posted January 20, 2018 According to my sister-in-law who actually works in the Passport Office... ...they will indeed get "furloughed" and halt their work on Monday if the shutdown is not settled by then. There are some supervisory personnel who will remain on the job for administrative purposes.
az_2_nc2013 Posted January 20, 2018 #4 Share Posted January 20, 2018 This is from travel.state.gov: At this time, scheduled passport services in the United States and our posts overseas will continue during the lapse in appropriations as the situation permits. This website will not be regularly updated until full operations resume, with the exception of emergency safety and security information. I am waiting on a renewal and sent an email to ask how/if the shutdown will have an effect on processing.

az_2_nc2013 Posted January 20, 2018 #6 Share Posted January 20, 2018 There may not be anyone there to reply to your email... Agreed, but it doesn't hurt to try! Hoping for the best either way.

The key words are "At this time..." That could change anytime. If this budget thing doesn't get settled over the weekend...the rank in file employees have already been told they will not report for work as early as next week. Supervisors will still be expected to report.

LizzyDragon Posted January 20, 2018 #9 Share Posted January 20, 2018 Based on what I've read about previous shutdowns, I would expect delays in passport processing. How much of a delay likely depends on how long the shutdown goes.
