nybumpkin Posted February 25, 2018 #27 Share Posted February 25, 2018 This thread brought back memories for me. In 2009 our oldest son embarked on his seafaring career at the US Merchant Marine Academy (he decided to go active duty Navy after graduation). The first few weeks are called "Indoc," essentially the academy's version of basic training. We had booked a cruise on Carnival Miracle out of NYC earlier, before he was accepted to the academy. We learned he would have one phone call - the day we were embarking. We just didn't know what time. We kept the phone turned on and hoped the call wouldn't come through during muster drill. We got the call about 15 minutes prior - he sounded completely shellshocked, and there was an upperclassman in the background telling him how much time he had left on his call. Two weeks later when Indoc was over and he wasn't as restricted he sounded much better.
