LakeWobegon Posted February 24, 2018 #1 Share Posted February 24, 2018 We are cruising out of Miami in August. Since it is Summer and my wife who is a teacher has some flexibility on her vacation schedule, we are going to get in two nights early versus one. Was thinking about booking a hotel on the beach and two years ago we spent a night at the Royal Palm South Beach. Was the kids first time in the ocean (now 11 and 13) and they loved it. You couldn't beat the location and the beach was awesome. The hotel itself was just OK. Our room wasn't really the cleanest when we checked in and the two double bed room felt cramped for 4 people. It was also nice that you could walk down Collins Ave and there was a Walgrens and other shops and restaurants right there. Anyway, after that long rambling paragraph, we are looking to see if there are other hotels in the same vicinity that might have that same great location and experience but with a little bigger and nicer room that doesn't break the bank. Would like to keep it to $300 or less a night. And truth be told, we wouldn't have to be on the beach so long as the walk to the hotel from the beach isn't more than a couple of blocks. Looking on Google Maps and then on Expedia myself to see if this exists but interested in anyone's opinions and experiences as well. Thanks in advance for any input you can provide! BlueHerons Posted February 24, 2018 #2 Share Posted February 24, 2018 Unless you are shelling out $10,000 a night for a room (literally), South Beach hotel rooms are notoriously small, really tiny because they were all built 75 years ago. Look at The Loews hotel. It was built in the last 15 years and so the rooms are much bigger. I personally loved the Royal Palm but last time we stayed there, we had a suite on the 17th floor (top). Also, try the Courtyard Marriott South Beach. It was also built in this century but it isn't oceanfront. I believe The Angler are/is all condohotels. Rare Keith1010 Posted February 24, 2018 #4 Share Posted February 24, 2018 For the price you are looking at I would take a look at what is available using trip advisor as your search engine to see pricing and reviews. Keith
LakeWobegon Posted February 25, 2018 Author #5 Share Posted February 25, 2018 Thanks all. Will check it out. I have fond memories of the Royal Palm overall. Just wasn't overly impressed. IMHO was very overpriced for the quality. But it was pleasant enough and again, the location is a big part of the price. May consider and off beach property. But being able to step out on the side balcony and see the cruise ships coming in to port in the morning of your cruise with a coffee is priceless. nikinakinoo Posted March 10, 2018 #6 Share Posted March 10, 2018 Hi Grand Beach Hotel. It's a bit further up Collins Ave but there is bus stops just outside. Their rooms are classed as suites with 2 bathrooms, balcony's, 2 pools and right on the beach. Haven't stayed there myself but this is where we have decided for our next pre-cruise
LakeWobegon Posted March 11, 2018 Author #7 Share Posted March 11, 2018 Thanks. We checked out the Grand Beach Hotel. Looks nice and roomy. We also took Keith's advice on TripAdvisor. For now we've booked the Holiday Inn Miami Beach for just under $500 for 2 nights. It's right on the beach by the Fontainbleau (spel?) and in a slightly busier location a little further north than the Royal Palm and some of the pricier hotels. Generally gets good reviews. Most negative reviews complain it is a little dated but so is the Royal Palm IMHO. Rooms will be smaller than GBH but we also got breakfast for that price and is in walking distance to other restaurants outside the hotel.
becky48417 Posted March 12, 2018 #8 Share Posted March 12, 2018 We love Collins Hotel. It's further up Collins, but it has a great pool area with the beach across the road. There are tons of restaurants nearby and a Publix a couple of blocks away. It's also much more affordable than South Beach, and our rooms have always been spotless. bighairtexan Posted March 12, 2018 #9 Share Posted March 12, 2018 A little further south from the Grand toward SoBe on the south side of Fontainebleau is Hotel Confidante. About the same price. A pool for adults only as well as a family pool. Your resort fee for the room includes 2 beach chairs and umbrellas (if staying in the same room you'd have to rent 2 more chairs or put a towel on the sand. Poolside and beach side food and bev service. It's right across from Primo Cafe and Market (cheap and mostly take out food w/ a few tables) and also near Primo Liquor Mart for wine purchases.
