Surrender passport on European cruise

This is normal in Asia and most of Europe now. It will become the standard. With ships having so many passages on them no way to clear the ship without pre clearing or waiting hours in port. Do the simple math even if you have 20 offices 2 minutes per guest, 5000 plus passengers crew, that is 30 people cleared in one hour times 20 officers 600 per hour, over 9 hours to clear a ship..... It would not work with short port calls. many cruise lines bring people on the ship at the port before to pre clear the ship. So you are eating, sleeping, having fun, in a room immigration offices and crew are clearing the ship.

Yes we are. The email from Carnival says all passenger passports will be collected. Will probably just take drivers licenses but feel kind of naked without passports so far from home. Would hate to think we were late getting back to ship (will not happen) and ship pulls out with our passports and without us.

 

They won't sail away with your passports. If for some reason you're not back on time, they'll give your passports to their onshore/port reps to give to you.
