Rijksmuseum or Van Gogh Museuem

Recommended Posts

If you have limited time, which museum Rijksmuseum or Van Gogh Museuem and why. TIA

I liked the Van Gogh Museum better - but I like that style of art. Rijksmuseum had more dark and furry stuff. Sort of like the Prado in Madrid.

It depends what you prefer. Old masters like Rembrandt, Frans Hals etc are in Rijksmuseum.

If you like the style of Van Gogh choose van Goghmuseum.

Check their websites and maybe google to see what I mean.

We covered the Van Gogh in 1/2 hour and felt cheated. A good history and timeline of his life and painting styles but all his masterpieces are somewhere else. I saw more of his paintings at the Art Institute in Chicago. I would do the Rijksmuseum but plan to see what was of interest to you.

I've been to both. I loved the Van Gogh, but the Rijks is also pretty cool. I would only visit the Rijks if you have a guide that can explain a lot of the "big" paintings there. And you need at least 2 hours there at a minimum. In 2 hours, you can completely cover the Van Gogh museum. It is more doable as a self-guided visit, too, as there is lots of written commentary as you follow along the path of his life and his works. I really enjoyed it.
