catl331 Posted April 19, 2018 #2 Share Posted April 19, 2018 (edited) We love to read with a nice glass of wine.Is there enough light on the balcony to read till late in the evening? How big is the table in the balcony? There is an outside light that can be used on all balconies except those far forward below the bridge, because they need darkness for visibility. Some people never discover the switch for that outside light because it hides behind the drapes! The table on a standard verandah is about 13">14" in diameter. BK512 Posted April 24, 2018 #3 Share Posted April 24, 2018 Pack a little book light. I have one that clips onto my Kindle cover and lights the pages. It also makes a good light to help me find the bathroom in the middle of the night! When are you going? If you're going to Alaska in, say, June...well, it will be light until 10pm or later. westcoastcruiser Posted April 24, 2018 #4 Share Posted April 24, 2018 I like the idea of the book light vs the balcony light. We may be in the minority, but one of our favorite things to do while cruising is to sit in the dark on the balcony and enjoy the moon and stars. With balcony lights on, it detracts from being able to do so. JMO

I certainly understand an affection for experiencing the quiet and dark of a cruise ship verandah, but I can also understand you wanting to enjoy your literary find in such a tranquil setting. Most, but not all, verandahs have a verandah light that can be controlled from your cabin. Most verandah tables are small but large enough to accommodate a couple wine glasses. I hope your enjoy your Oosterdam verandah.
