kkbiker Posted July 20, 2018 #1 Share Posted July 20, 2018 We are doing a Celebrity cruise of the Greek Isles in Sep 2018. On what isles do you recommend we book a tour through Celebrity or a private tour company. Our travel agent recommended a private company and the prices are about half of Celebrity. Rare mom says Posted July 20, 2018 #2 Share Posted July 20, 2018 Welcome to Cruise Critic. I think you'll get more information from the Greece Ports subforums on the Ports of Call board : https://boards.cruisecritic.com/forumdisplay.php?f=
CEOofVacation Posted July 21, 2018 #3 Share Posted July 21, 2018 We just did an Italy and Greek Isles cruise on Reflection in April/May '18. We booked excursions at every port except for Mykonos. Shore excursions which we booked really enhanced our port experience, some were through Celebrity while others were through the roll call or something that we found on our own. Rare Essiesmom Posted July 21, 2018 #4 Share Posted July 21, 2018 We can't give you recommendations without knowing which islands you are visiting. EM
NCHPcruiser Posted July 21, 2018 #5 Share Posted July 21, 2018 You are perhaps on the Reflection visiting Sicily, Malta, Naples, Athens, Mykonos, Rhodes and Santorini. We are doing this cruise (with friends) in early September for the second time and have guides in all but Mykonos and Rhodes. We always book with a private company, usually forming a small group through the Roll Call and think there is so much to be gained in booking a guide. Rare chemmo Posted July 21, 2018 #6 Share Posted July 21, 2018 If you want an overview of the islands tours/tour guides are worth considering. If you look at the Celebrity tours they will give you an idea of what is available then do some research on trip advisor and visit your roll call. We do sometimes use X tours (usually when we have lots of OBC) and they are fine but they are usually quite big coaches. Independent tours tend to be smaller groups and you can sometimes modify to better suit your interests. On some islands, however, it can be nice to just ‘savour the atmosphere’. For example, Rhodes Town is nice to just meander around, in Valletta you can visit the church independently then walk up the hill and watch the cannon sound at midday. When we visit the islands we try to arrange a variety of trip types. For example on one island do an island tour with a wine tasting, next island a boat trip, next visit an archaeological site.... Hope you have a great cruise!
