Not sure if we can get Peso in Toronto before we leave as some places say they do not get. We checked at Scotia Bank and BMO and neither could get us Argentinian pesos. So I think we will bring US cash as well as our Canadian credit card (Visa).

Plan A is walking up to a ATM in Ushuaia.😁 Take a left after you exit the port in Ushuaia and walk along the coast road. You'll see an ATM on your right within 3 or 4 blocks. Several Banks with inside Atm's within a few blocks. Keep walking to the end and you can go to the excellent Prison Museum. :)
tai.chi.cruiser Posted December 18, 2018 #30 Share Posted December 18, 2018 It’s always good to have local currency on hand if possible. With peso in hands, we hailed a taxi across the street from cruise terminal to hotel for less than 200 peso (US$5) when others paid US$20 for the same ride from the terminal taxi line. Cambios on Florida St accept US $, Euro & Brazil Real, best rate for US $. Our taxi from hotel to EZE accepted credit card. We used Canadian credit cards for large purchases and the exchange rate was quite good ~30 (Dec 2018).
canuckgardener Posted December 19, 2018 #31 Share Posted December 19, 2018 We were able to get Argentine Pesos, Brazilean Reals as well as Chilean Peso here in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada at the Calforex money exchange for excellent rates.
skkeller Posted December 22, 2018 #32 Share Posted December 22, 2018 Just checked yesterday at Chase Bank in Yuma, AZ for currency needed on cruise. No problem with Chilean pesos and Uraguayan (sp?) pesos. Could not obtain Argentine pesos or Falkland pounds. The bank said they (USA) had no financial transaction agreements with Argentina so no currency exchange -- my very simplistic understanding of the money situation, could not get the Argentine pesos. Bank personnel could not find the Falkland Islands on their exchange list??? Will continue checking other bank resources before we leave.
Budget Queen Posted December 22, 2018 #33 Share Posted December 22, 2018 You don't need "Falkland" pounds- simply get British pounds. Many times a poor exchange using US dollars. I never change money for Uruguay .
DanL Posted December 24, 2018 #34 Share Posted December 24, 2018 (edited) Got 3300 pesos at HSBC ATM one block from the hotel. Easy peasy but they did charge approximately $10 us. It lasted us all two weeks . We also used cards. Taxis cheap no need to figure out public transport. Great trip. Saildude16 Posted December 28, 2018 #35 Share Posted December 28, 2018 Question for Lunenburg - We're taking shore excursions in Montevideo and PDE. Assume AR$ will be accepted. Correct? Thanks for your local knowledge.
Lunenburg Posted December 29, 2018 #36 Share Posted December 29, 2018 I would think so, they generally are happy with US dollars as well and USD may give you a better exchange rate. You will find Abitabs near the ports - they have a blue sign and will exchange currencies to Uruguayan pesos if needed. They also post the daily exchange rates outside for USD, AR and reals. If possible use a credit card for restaurants as you will get a 22% deduction on the tax.
Saildude16 Posted January 1, 2019 #37 Share Posted January 1, 2019 Interestingly enough there is an official ARS/USD exchange rate as well as the "blue" Dollar rate. On 12/28/18 the Official buy rate was 36.83, while the blue rate was 38.50 - a 4.5% difference. The sell rate differential was similar. Blue dollar rate is apparently obtained at a Cueva. Got this info after reading an article from landingpadBA.com.
