Rome or Florence transfer only

If you are going to do one of them on your own, I'd suggest Florence over Rome -- simply because Florence is more compact and very easy to get around to the major sites on your own. Rome is a larger city and even though most sites are within the city center, the traffic, the transportation options, and outlying locations like the Vatican make it a bit more challenging.

If you do decide to do Florence on your own, be sure to research getting advance tickets for popular sites such as the Accademia (where Michelangelo's David is displayed) or the Uffizi Gallery. Otherwise you will spend your entire time waiting in lines.

Also, Florence has the most varied schedule of openings/closings of any city I know. Check what day you are scheduled to be there. Many sites are closed on Mondays but some are closed on random other days or are only open for short hours or, say, from 10am to 2pm.
