$1000 CAD or $800 USD

I can bring either $1000 Canadian dollars or $800 US dollars to my days in Cuba. Which will get me more CUCs?  The exchange rates are confusing me.

CAD$1000 should get you  CUC$727.50 at today's exchange rate.  USD$800 would get you CUC$696.

 

The exchange rate is straightforward. 

 

USD to CUC is simply .87 CUCs to the dollar.  CAD to CUC is the same as CAD to USD less 3%,

I would not take USDs because there is a 10% surcharge in addition to the exchange rate.  I would suggest taking either CADs or Euros to avoid the surcharge.  I know Bank of America and Wells Farge Bank will exchange USDs to Euros.  We had no problem exchanging Euros in Cuba.

Assuming you have free access to either $1,000 CAD or $800 US (no exchanging one for the other, no fees, etc.), then ignore every other response on this thread except the one by pbenjamin.
