Use of WhatsApp on Oceania Ships

Does anyone have experience using the WhatsApp app on Oceania ships. I know it is supposed to work in ports when you are connected to WIFI, but does it work onboard too? This will be our first time trying to use it. Thanks!

do you have to pay for the internet connection?

You use WiFi, so if you have free wi-fi on the ship - you do not have to pay.  I have all cellular functions turned off when I use the application.
