delgirl Posted June 29, 2019 #1 Share Posted June 29, 2019 Is there plenty to do in heraklion or would it be better to do a ship excusion. Seen an excursion to spinalonga and elounda for £52.00 each wondering if it is worth the price. Also we are going in August so walking about in the heat maybe a problem. Rare Eglesbrech Posted June 29, 2019 #2 Share Posted June 29, 2019 There is certainly enough to do there for a day. The palace of Knossos is not too far away if you want to visit there by bus or taxi. It is very hot there and mostly open with not a lot of shade. If you like Greek mythology you would enjoy seeing it though. In the centre of the town are several museums including the Heraklion Archaeological Museum which has lots from the Minoan culture including the original of the “prince of the lilies” on the upper floor (at Knossos there are replicas of some of the frescos held at the museum). We did Palace in the morning when it was a little cooler then the museum PM. If you just want to walk around there is a good choice of shops and restaurants. Angel57 Posted June 29, 2019 #3 Share Posted June 29, 2019 Elounda and Spinalonga are lovely. I’ve not done a trip from the ship but have holidayed in Elounda. Heraklion is quite pleasant to wander around and as much as I like Knossos, it could be very hot in August.
kruzseeka Posted June 29, 2019 #4 Share Posted June 29, 2019 We did a ship's trip to Spinalonga - it was fascinating especially with the input of the guide. It didn't expect it to be so interesting. If you've not read Victoria Hislop's book ''The Island' set on Spinalonga it's a very good read, either before you go or for more background after a visit. Elounda is lovely too. We had a nice lunch as part of the trip at a waterside cafe although that's some time ago so the excursion details may be different now.
