Never even heard of luggage service back to the airport until just now, however I know some homeports have excursions that will take your luggage to the airport and you can explore the homeport (New Orleans).

Carnival used to have a program where they would check you in (to the airline) on board and when your bags were picked up outside your room, next time you saw them was your home airport.

This past January, we took a carnival excursion in San Juan, which included luggage transfer. This was a post cruise excursion since we had a late flight home. After the excursion was over, our luggage was waiting at the airport for us (under supervision).
