Carnival Cruise Lines to Introduce New Low Carb Menu Items Fleetwide

Specially Prepared Appetizer, Salad and Entree Selections to List Carb Content

 

 

MIAMI, April 21 -- In response to the explosive growth in popularity of low carb diets, Carnival Cruise Lines will begin rolling out specially designated low carb dining selections on dinner menus this week with a gradual fleetwide implementation over the next month.

 

"Whether consumers are following Atkins, South Beach, the Zone, or simply subscribing to the low carb philosophy, we want to make it as easy and convenient as possible to enjoy the pleasures of the Carnival dining experience," said Bob Dickinson, Carnival president and CEO.

 

Dinner menus in the ships' main dining rooms will feature an appetizer, salad and entree with a low carbohydrate count. The number of carbohydrate grams per dish is listed beneath each low carb selection.

 

The designated low carb appetizer and entree dishes on each evening's menu are designed to complement each other. Primary ingredients focus heavily on vegetables, meat and fish blended with flavorful seasonings and creative preparation. The low carb dishes are included both within the overall list of menu selections for each course as well as in a special box on the opposite page labeled Low Carb Selection, which contains all low carb items from that evening's menu.

 

The new low carb selections are being introduced on menus aboard the Carnival Victory this week with implementation throughout the balance of the company's 20-ship fleet expected to occur over the next month.

 

"The low carb phenomenon has been building for years and has recently evolved to such an extraordinary degree that there is tremendous consumer demand for carb-conscious dining options and specific carb count information," said Dickinson. "We are constantly striving to stay abreast of societal trends and provide our guests with choices that meet the needs of their individual lifestyles," he added.

 

Sample low carb appetizer selections include: Vine Ripe Beefsteak Tomatoes and Fresh Buffalo Mozzarella -- Marinated with Basil Leaves and Virgin Olive Oil -- 3 grams of carbs; Hickory Smoked Alaskan Salmon -- Garnished with Purple Onion Rings, Fresh Dill and Baby Capers -- 2 grams of carbs; Escargots Bourguignonne -- Burgundy Snails in Garlic Butter with an Infusion of Chablis and Pernod -- 5 grams of carbs; Gravlaks -- Thinly Sliced Norwegian Fjord Salmon Cured with Dill and Brandy Presented with a Sour Cream Mustard Sauce -- 5 grams of carbs

 

Sample low carb entree selections include: Filet Mignon with Gorgonzola Butter -- Aged Center-Cut Beef Tenderloin, Grilled to Perfection with Green Beans -- 8 grams of carbs; Pepper-Seared Supreme of Young Long Island Duckling -- Marsala Infused Purple Onion Confit, Steamed Bok Choy and Sauteed Spinach -- 6 grams of carbs; Tender Roasted Prime Rib of American Beef au Jus, Cooked to Perfection -- Broccoli Roses and Grilled Tomato -- 4 grams of carbs; Jerked Pork Loin -- Slowly Roasted Center Cut Pork Loin, Marinated in Island Spices and Herbs Sauteed Savoy Cabbage with Bacon -- 6 grams of carbs.

 

A reduced carbohydrate bread selection will be available each evening on request, as well.

 

Carnival lunch and dinner menus in the main dining rooms also feature Spa Carnival selections, which are lower in calories, sodium, cholesterol and fat. Designated items are accompanied by a listing of the number of calories and grams of fat contained within each selection.

 

Every Carnival "Fun Ship" also features a Spa Carnival health and fitness facility offering a wide array of fitness classes, exercise machines and free weights, along with a luxurious selection of body and facial treatments.

That is so cool. I'm doing Atkins right now to get a little extra cruise weight off and I'll be on Carnival 5/20!

 

I personally would like to stick to the diet while on the Cruise. I've averaged a weight gain of about 4 pounds for the last 5 cruises. If I keep cruising so much and focus on the food so much, I'm going to be in big trouble. I don't eat like this all of the time, so I'd like to get away from the buffet mentaility and really enjoy my cruise. Plus I feel so much better eating low carb. I'm not uncomfortable and tired all of the time.

 

Now if they could just find a low carb Corona or Pina Coloda, I'd be really ahead of the game!

I'm with you, bld24. I'm glad to see these options available for those who want them. If your body can handle refined white flour and white sugar, good for you! But many of us prefer to stay away from these things for one reason or another.

 

DH and I aren't on a "diet" but have made a permanent lifestyle change by following the South Beach plan. I'm at the point now where I don't want to eat most high-glycemic index foods. And we even figure in things like dessert. icon_biggrin.gif

I am currently on the Atkins diet to drop few pounds before cruise--good point lasif...I had planned to celebrate big on the cruise--I better start before! I am like Laurab---who wants to diet a cruise?

I hear carbs are afraid of water and can't swim.

 

They all jump out of the food (along with the calories and fat grams, who are also water-afraid wussies) before the food is loaded onto the ship.

 

I thought EVERYONE knew this!

 

Atkins has been very good to me (25# since feb), but I'm working the carbs in gradually to handle those 5 bagels on day 1 on the ship!

 

I'll go back to the diet when I'm home, but WILL NOT suffer on vacation. Period!

So this is a clever way to save money by not serving bread to "carb-conscious" guests?

 

I guess they won't be selling them any birthday cakes though

Even thou I am not a low carb follower, I think this is great for those who are. Menu items sound really good and I would probably try a few myself. Kudos to Carnival.

Most cruise ships offer an abundance of meat, poultry and fish dishes that will keep us carb conscious already and there are always salads etc lol what i want on a menu is at least three scrumptious low carb high flavour desserts lol now that would be an improvement ahaha.. by the way for all those doing the low carb any really great hints about things to snack on ... Rosie, not sure if this will help you if you're Atkins since I'm a South Beach-er which is NOT low-carb (contrary to popular misconception), but I would snack on the following: strawberries (any berries), grapes, apples, nuts, low-fat cheese sticks, veggie sticks with low-fat cream cheese or natural PB, low-fat sugar-free yoghurt, glass of V8 or skim milk, sliced deli-meats (roll-up in lettuce!), some whole-grain crackers or rolls, etc. Personally, I find plenty to eat on the cruise that is natural and unprocessed but do treat myself to things I wouldn't normally indulge in as that is the point of a vacation, I think! Plenty of time to get on track at home where I don't have so many wonderful choices!

Thanks Karen its good to get some feed back and normally eating on a cruise is not a big deal and yes i too think you can treat yourself and yet there are lots of choices that are good for you but taste greatttttttttt lol ...

Same old stuff... "new" package..

 

These items, as I recall, have been on the menu for a couple of years.. (except for the mention of LOW CARB bread...) but I guess it looks impressive to slap a new label on it..

 

marketing... geesh....

 

Eat whatever, and as much, as you want while on a cruise, and let time sort it out...LOL

I'm psyched to hear this! One can eat low carb, low fat and still enjoy their food. That doesn't mean I won't still have dessert.. actually, that means I now can definitely have a great dessert!

I am also thrilled to hear this!! I thought for sure, all my hard work would be for nothing once I got on the ship - now I can enjoy it all without any guilt... although, I am like most of you, I do want to indulge on vacation but I don't want the consequences of a weight gain;

Lost 13 lbs in 3 weeks on SouthBeach, DH lost 18 in the same time - we are converts for sure, not hungry, feel great and can fit into clothes - we are slowing in our weight loss now but it is still coming off slowly but surely, I'm only a few pounds from my goal weight and that is where I want to stay...

 

yeah Carnival~Low Carb :p
